NCSA Mosaic for Microsoft Windows User's Guide

The World Wide Web (The Web, WWW, W3, and W3)

The World Wide Web project provides a hypermedia environment for global information distribution. The Web introduces a new protocol, the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP), and a new file type or data format, the HyperText Markup Language (HTML). The Web also provides an interface to existing communication protocols (FTP, Telnet, WAIS, Gopher, NNTP, etc.) and data formats (images, documents, sounds, etc.) in one package.

As you read about the World Wide Web, you will find several acronyms and abbreviations used. Many writers refer to it as the Web or WWW; others use W3, and W3.
