NCSA Mosaic for Microsoft Windows User's Guide

Inline Images and External Viewers

As mentioned above, hyperlinks can also point to images, sound files, movies, and more. When a selected hyperlink points to a data resource that NCSA Mosaic cannot handle internally, it displays the data file by means of external viewers. These external viewers are independent applications developed for viewing specific types of data. For example, depending on how your system is configured, GIF images can be sent by default to the program lview, a commonly-used image viewer; audio files can be sent to the program wham. NCSA Mosaic's use of external programs to handle specific data types is completely configurable.
