KeyData Specialists, Inc. 1045 Outer Park Drive, Suite 230B Springfield, IL 62704 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE KeyData Specialists Introduce "IBCnet" Springfield, Illinois, August 25, 1994 - KeyData Specialists, Inc. announced the formation today of the Internet BBS Collective Network (IBCnet). This network will allow operators of online systems to put thier systems on the Internet in a low cost environment. The primary service will consist of a DS0 (56k connection) or a DS1 (T1 connection) to KeyData's Springfield office. "By creating this network we will be forming a collective community of BBSs," said Steve Horrighs, Program Development Manager, "and then we will be able to collectively purchase services such as X.25 and Internet access as well as any other technological advances." Horrighs noted that thier BBS, Fantasy Land, will be the first BBS to connect to IBCnet. "It is our hope to get about a dozen other system operators onto the network so that these excessive connectivity costs may be deferred by the group, as well as get better pricing on these services." Each new system operator joining this network will become a Point of Presence (POP) for IBCnet. By doing this IBCnet will be able to sell direct SLIP/PPP accounts from the POP site. Sysops of the POP site will then receive commission based on SLIP/PPP sales. Horrighs stated that the IBCnet program came out of a brainstorm session after attending ONE BBSCON '94 in Atlanta. While at the BBSCON, Steve saw the overwhelming rush to get onto the Internet by BBS operators and began thinking of how this market could be tapped. KeyData Specialists had already been dabbling with the idea of becoming an Internet Provider, but after the show Steve convinced the management that creating IBCnet would benefit all parties involved while still allowing the company to become an Internet Provider. Services planned will include Internetworking all members with a DS1 (T1) line from the Springfield office to an Internet provider. KeyData is also planning modem pools at each POP to allow non-Internet access to all the members of each POP site, therefore local access numbers would be available. Full Usenet distribution is also planned. More services will be announced as they become available. Through IBCnet, system operators will gain from additional income that the IBCnet commissions generate and users will gain from easy Internet access. "Its a 'win-win' situation," claimed Steve, " and we're tremendously excited about it.
