Easy and Step by Step Visual Guide Setup Tutorial for Interfacing Wildcat! v4.x with FidoNet. Using Wildcat! BBS v4.x, GoMail v2.x and InterMail v2.29 version 1.0 GOMail v2.x Setup Part Written by: Mufutau Towobola P.O. Prior version of GoMail like v1.2 will not work with the new release of Wildcat! v4.x. At the time this documentation is written, GoMail v2.x is not yet available to general public for download because it's still at the beta stage but it works perfectly, but you can still obtain this version from the authors named Mike Ortiz and Scott Green upon registration at their respective BBS which is listed in this documentation. When this version is readily available for general public for download, according to the Mike Ortiz (one of the authors) the file will be named GOMAIL20.ZIP. Registration is only $45 for this decent FTSC compatible tosser/scanner and it really worth the price. This documentation is not to replace the documentation that comes with your version of GoMail, but I will make things easy and simple for you to get started so you will only need to refer to your manual if things are not understandable to you. Believe me when you are finished with this my documentation setup, you will only need the Gomail manual for reference. Now, let's get to work. This setup assumed you are using drive C:, so please substitute this drive for your actual drive letter. Create the following directories on the drive that you will be installing your copy of Gomail v2.x. C:\GOMAIL C:\GOMAIL\OUTBOUND C:\GOMAIL\BADMSG C:\GOMAIL\DUPMSG C:\GOMAIL\WORK Details on the above sub-directories: ------------------------------------- C:\GOMAIL --> Unzip your GOMAIL20.ZIP into this directory. C:\GOMAIL\OUTBOUND --> This directory will contain your outgoing mails. C:\GOMAIL\BADMSG --> Your bad messages will be stored here, if enabled. C:\GOMAIL\DUPMSG --> Your dupe messages will be stored here, if enabled. C:\GOMAIL\WORK --> Temporary work directory for GoMail to use, never put anything in this directory, it should always be empty. Unzip your GOMAIL20.ZIP into C:\GOMAIL, and also copy your GOMAIL2.KEY to this directory. Copy the FIDONET.NA and FIDONET.NO and the sample AREAS.BBS enclosed in this archive into C:\GOMAIL directory. The FIDONET.NA and FIDONET.NOfiles above contains the list of all FidoNet echo conferences and their respective echo-tag name to be used later in our AREAS.BBS setup. They are all ordinary ascii text files and you can use your favorite text editor to view them. The AREAS.BBS file will need to be edited later and we shall go into it in full details later in this documentation. This file will be needed by GoMail. If you forget to create any of the required above sub-directories at this time, GoMail will asked you if to create the directories for you during the setup time. Now that you have unzip your GoMail programs into C:\GOMAIL, now change to your C:\GOMAIL and type GOEDIT to start the setup procedure, and the next screen will appear. Drive/Path to your BBS Home Dir: This is your Wildcat! v4.x home directory, usually this is C:\WILDCAT from Wildcat! v4.x installation, but I changed mine to C:\WC40, so whatever you call your Wildcat! directory should be entered here. This is the directory where all your Wildcat! v4.x related program files are located. Where is your Netmail Directory: This is the directory for our Netmails that we have created in our Mailer setup. If you are using Frontdoor, this will be C:\FD\NETMAIL and if you are using InterMail, this will be C:\IM\NETMAIL. Where is your outbound files dir: This is the directory we created earlier. This is where all your outbound mail packets created by GoMail for transfer to your HUB will be located. Do not mess with this directory and the files in it. As soon as the mails are transfer to your HUB, it will be automatically deleted by your Mailer (Frontdoor/Intermail) and GoMail. Make sure this drive also have enough space to hold your outgoing mails. This directory will be C:\GOMAIL\OUTBOUND for all setup. Where is your inbound files directory: This is the directory created earlier in our Mailer Frontdoor/InterMail) setup to receive any files coming to to our system thru our Mailer. All your received mail packets will be located in this directory and GoMail will found them and un-archive them into it's temporary work directory and toss them into your Wildcat! message area. As per our setup, if you are using Frontdoor, it will be C:\FD\FILES and if you are using InterMail it will be C:\IM\FILES. Where is your BadEcho directory: This is the directory where all bad messages determined by GoMail as bad will be placed. You should from time to time look in this directory for messages and verify them if they are actually bad messages, if they are bad messages, you can safely delete them. This directory can be filled in no time, so make sure you delete the files in it very often. Where is your DupMsg directory: This is the directory where all duplicate messages determined by GoMail as duplicates will be placed, if this option is enabled in our next screen setup. I recommend disabling this option. If you enable this option, you should from time to time look in this directory for messages and verify them if they are actually duplicate messages, if they are duplicate messages, you can safely delete them. This directory can be filled in no time, so make sure you delete the files in it very often. If you disable this option, you should not have any message files in this directory, but you must still have this directory created regardless. This option has been disabled in this my setup, because I don't see why someone will want to keep duplicate messages anyway. Where is your GoMail Work Directory: This is the temporary work directory for GoMail to use for it's work space to un-archive your received mail packets, toss them and then delete them when finished. And also your scanned messages will be placed in this directory and packed in FidoNet format and be placed in the outbound directory for transfer to your HUB. Never place any file in this directory as it will be deleted by GoMail. This directory should always be empty unless when Gomail is running or it's processing mail packets. Note: You must make sure this directory exists, or else GoMail will not work. When finished press Esc key to save your settings and now highlight Mailer option from the Main Menu for next screen. For best result, all the settings should be set as you see them above, except for some specific items that must be changed based on an individual configurations. If you need more specific details on a settings, you should refer to the documentation that comes with GoMail but it will probably not explain it better than what I will tell you here. Note: Always use your spacebar to toggle option. BBS Options ----------- BBS Type: Make sure you toggle this to WC4.x (This version of GoMail at the time this documentation was written, does not work with any other version of Wildcat!, it only works with Wildcat! v4.x) Maximum BBS Messages/Conf (MainLine Only): Leave this option alone. This is for an upcoming BBS software in beta being written by Scott Green. Notify User of New Messages: Of course, you will want to notify your users when they logon to your BBS. Netmail Echo Conference: This is the conference number from Wildcat! as defined in Makewild for your Netmail conference. You MUST have ONLY one Netmail conference. Lock Count: This settings is used by GoMail for maximum number of messages that can be imported or exported, so that the conference can be free to other programs that may need to use it. Leave this at the setting you see here for better result. Auto Purge Message Database: This option is used to trim your messages to the number set in Makewild. This option does not work even in Wildcat! at this time and you must run WCPACK from Wildcat! for your message database to be trimmed. Save SEENBY: lines in BBS: If you enable this option all those ugly SEEN-BYs in message will be imported with your message into Wildcat! database. You should leave this option set to N for better result. Believe me those SEEN-BYs are ugly in a message, this is mostly used for debugging ONLY. Max Open Conferences: This settings is used by GoMail lock and unlock the conferences when mail is being imported or exported, so that other program will not try to access the message database when it's in use. Allow Crash Netmail from BBS: This option set to Y for YES, so that you will be able to write crash Netmail messages from inside your BBS. Note: To fully implement this in Wildcat! v4.x, you will need a Netmail door such as WCFIDO.ZIP available on MSI HQ BBS and follow it's documentation to set it up on your BBS. This is a FREEWARE program released by Scott J. Miller, I strongly recommend it. Network Type: If you are running a single line, you should toggle this to SINGLE LINE. But if you are running Multinodes, including a local Node, e.g. PEER-to-PEER LAN, Lantastic, Novell Lite/Personal, DESQview, etc. you MUST toggle this to DOS SHARE and you must also have SHARE.EXE loaded in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS. If you are running Novell v2.x v3.x or v4.x, you must toggle this option to NOVELL. Fidonet Options --------------- The four items below is based on your Node address, and since we are using a temporary address for now and our example is: 1:278/9999 which actually means 1:278/9999.0 for a Node like our setup for Fidonet here. You will need to replace this with your own temporary address for now until you receive your actual address from your NC and you will come back to this option and change it to your real assigned address. Your Primary ZONE Number: This will be the Zone address for your area, the one you have used in your Mailer setup as your Primary Main address. In our example address of 1:278/9999, you will put 1 here. Your Primary Net Number: This will be the Net address for your area, the one you have used in your Mailer setup as your Primary Main address. In our example address of 1:278/9999, you will put 278 here. Your Primary Node Number: This will be the Node address for your own system, the one you have used in your Mailer setup as your Primary Main address. In our example address of 1:278/9999, you will put 9999 here. Note: You must back here later when you receive your actual node address from your NC and change it from the temporary to the actual node number. Your Primary Point Number 0=None: This will be the Point address for your system, (if you are a Point) the one you have used in your Mailer setup as your Primary Main address. Generally for a Node this, will be 0 . In our example address of 1:278/9999, you will put 0 here, because we are not a Point but a Node and 1:278/9999 actually means 1:278/9999.0. So, just leave this at 0 (zero). Duplicates ---------- Auto Purge Duplicate Database: This means GoMail will purge the duplicate database that it creates and it works in conjunction with the next setting. Leave this option set to Y for YES. If this option is set to N for NO, GoMail will not purge the duplicate messages that it creates, and the duplicate database file will just keep on getting bigger. Maximum Number of Dups in Dup Database: This is the number of duplicate messages references that GoMail will keep in it's database based on the above settings, if set to Y for YES. The number 5000 should be enough for normal use. Save Dups in .MSG format: This option is if you want to save any duplicate message that GoMail found as .MSG format and get dumped in your duplicate message directory which is C:\GOMAIL\DUPMSG. I will recommend setting this to N for NO. I don't see the reason why any reasonable Sysop will want to keep duplicate messages. But it's your board and your choice, but I have told you, so if you want to be smart like me set this N for NO, unless you have a good reason to set it to Y for YES, I don't. Forwarding ---------- Forward packets not destined to this address: This recommended setting for this option should be N for NO. Because this means if any message that is not addressed to your board mistakenly find it's way to your board, then your board will call the system where the message is supposed to go, you will then incur the telephone expenses for other peoples message. For your own goodness set this to N for NO. Maximum Number of Messages per Packet: Most old Fidonet mail tosser/scanner will not be able to handle a large mail packets. The recommended setting for this option should be 300 because most tossers support up to 300 messages per packet. Change this option from default option of 5 to 300, but nothing more and nothing less, in contrary to what the GoMail documentation said of recommending 1000, I do not recommend this. Change this to 300, so that each packets will contain only 300 messages. Default Archive Type: This is the default archiver type that you will be using on your system. I have set this to ZIP. If you don't want your default archiver as ZIP but ARJ or something else, then change this to your own default archiver. I will not recommend any archiver over another. Just make sure all your archiver is located in a directory stated in your path statement so that GoMail can easily found it. Note: You can change this on a HUB or Node basis in "Archive Override" under the "Options" setting that we shall explain later in this setup. Create .MSG file for NetMail: I have set this option to Y for YES. This is useful if you will be reading and writing Netmails from your Frontdoor or InterMail message editor. I often read and write messages from my Mailers message editor by using ALT+E from the "Waiting for Caller Screen" instead of login in to my board locally to read or write my netmail messages, so I actually can use both at my convenient. You should leave this option set to Y for YES and delete any messages you don't want to keep from the Mailers Message Editor. Mailer Type: This specifies the type of Frontend Mailer you are running. If you are running any version of Frontdoor use your spacebar to toggle this option to Frontdoor. If you are running any version of InterMail use your spacebar to toggle this option to Frontdoor, regardless. Now, you ask me why do you need to use Frontdoor option for both Frontdoor and InterMail, right? That is because Frontdoor and InterMail actually function the same way. Don't you see how they resemble each others? That's because Frontdoor and InterMail are brothers, sisters or whatever you want to call them. So set this option to Frontdoor for both Frontdoor and InterMail setup. Kill Empty (Null) messages: Set this option to Y for YES, so that GoMail will kill any message coming into your board without a message body. What will you want to do with a blank message on your board? Maximum K-Bytes in Outbound Archive: Set this to 0 (zero) so that GoMail will not limit how big an outbound packets to your HUB or Node will be created. Why? Because it's actually cheaper and faster to transfer a mail archive that is 900k than transferring three separate archives of 300k each. Leave this option at 0 (zero). Add Unknown Confs as: This option is set to NONE. If you run GoMail with Plannet Connect with a lot conferences coming down from satellite and you only need few from them, you can set this to VAPORIZE to delete and kill all those unwanted areas. Other options are PASSTHRU, NEXT, and CONF. For your own setting, just leave this option at NONE. After you have entered everything correctly, press esc to save your settings and exit to continue with other options. You will not be able to do anything here until you have completed all the setup of GoMail and at least run GOMAIL SCAN TOSS for GoMail to create it's needed database. You can just leave this option alone for now and complete all the setup and then come back here later if you want to see the settings here. But, let's say you have completed all the settings and have at least run GOMAIL SCAN TOSS once and you come back to this option, below and the next screen will be how the option will look like. Let me tell you now that you will probably never need to use this "Edit Conference" option, because it's only useful if you need to change or customize an origin line for a certain specific echo conference that is different from the normal origin line you have defined for your Zones. In normal circumstances you will not need to do anything in this setting. Please press any key to continue to next option. As seen above on line 1: I have Zone 1 defined with my regular Origin Line for Fidonet because in this example we used an address of 1:278/9999, that means any echomail that GoMail scans (exported) out from my BBS for FidoNet using the above address will have that particular origin line appended to the messages. If you are using this documentation in other part of the world, please put your appropriate Zone number for your address here. As you can see, the Zone is 1 to the left, and then my BBS name, location, and telephone number. Keep this short so that it does not truncate or wrap. Please do not include your Node address in this origin line here because GoMail will automatically append your node address to your messages when they are exported from your board. Another example in Line 2: In have my AfroNet origin line defined with Zone 101 because my address for AfroNet is 101:13/106. I have used Zone 101 for this origin line and then the short name of the Network any my BBS info. You can only have one origin line per a given Zone. So if you belong to any other Network with different Zone address, you must enter it separately on each line here as seen above. Note: Your origin line should normally and only contain your BBS Name, Location, telephone number, an the name of your Private Network if required by your Private Network as seen above. You do not not need to include FidoNet as Network name for any origin line you define for FidoNet Zones. And please remember not to include your Node address in this origin line definition as this will be appended to your messages automatically by GoMail when they are exported from your message. You will only need to define any of your HUB or Node that will not be using your default archiver format as defined previously. For example: Remember we have previously defined the Default Archiver to be ZIP. Then, let's say that my HUB at 1:278/1000 for some reason does not use ZIP to compress his/her mail packets but instead uses ARJ archiver. So I will then need to enter his/her node address here and toggle ARJ for this specific node. So the settings above will then look like below: Zone Net Node Point 1) 1 278 1000 0 ARJ NOTE: You only need to define this settings for any HUB or Node (downlink) that does not use your Default Archiver. If your HUB or Node (downlink) uses the same archiver as your default archiver to compress your mail packets, then you will NOT need to have anything define here. This is a very important settings in GoMail and must be entered properly, if you do not define this part correctly, then you will have problem with importing or exporting your mail, but it's a very simple procedure if you follow my explanations carefully. First you must have copied the sample AREAS.BBS enclosed with this archive into your Gomail directory, i.e. C:\GOMAIL. This is where you will define all echomail conferences you will carry on your board with their respective conference numbers as defined in Wildcat! Makewild, the echo tag-name from FIDONET.NA or FIDONET.NO, and then your HUB address, and your downlink addresses, if you are a HUB, as seen in the example above. Now the details: (1) Change the first line to your BBS Name, phone Number, then two spaces and then put # or ! and another one space and then your name. Although this specific line is not used by GoMail, it is definitely needed to conform to AREAS.BBS format and it must be there. You must have this line define. (2) On the second line just put a semicolon (;) to demarcate the lines, this is not colon (:) but a semicolon, i.e. a dot ontop and a comma below it. (3) Lines three (3) downwards are the most important lines broken down into the following options: (a) The 10 is your Conference number as defined in Wildcat! Makewild. You must make sure this number starts on column 1 of that line. (b) WILDCAT is the echo tag-name from FIDONET.NA or FIDONET.NO. This must be in CAPITAL LETTERS and at least one or two spaces from the conference number above to separate them. (c) 1:278/1000 is the address of your HUB (or also address of your (Downlink Nodes, if you also act as a HUB). You must then continue downward to list all your other conferences as instructed above with Makewild Conference Number, the echo tagname and HUB or downlink node addresses respectively for each conferences you intend to echo or carry on your board. Make sure you specify the correct Wildcat! BBS Makewild conference number. The spellings of the echo tagname must be correct and type in CAPITAL LETTERS as seen in FIDONET.NA or FIDONET.NO. Your HUB or downlink node address must be specified correctly. There must always be at least one or two blank spaces between the Conference Number, Echo tagname, and the HUB address for this settings to work correctly. There is also a setting of option of P for Pass-Thru that can be used in replacement of Wildcat! Conference number, but this is ONLY used if you are a HUB, this settings means that this specific conference with P is just passing thru your system to your downlink nodes without that particular area being imported into your Wildcat! BBS message database. You should not have to use this option unless you are HUB and feeding other Downlink Nodes. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please do not include your Netmail conference in this setup of AREAS.BBS definition. Some people make this mistake of including their Netmail conference in the AREAS.BBS and use NETMAIL as their echo tagname, this is incorrect and wrong. So, please do not define your Netmail conference here as that has been taken care when we are defining "Mailer" under "BBS Options". Only your echomails should be entered in AREAS.BBS with their corresponding echo tagname and the HUB address. Note: If you don't want to use this AREAS.BBS Editor screen in GOEDIT, you can directly modify your AREAS.BBS with any of your favorite ascii text editor in the format I have explained above. But I think it's very convenient by doing it here inside GoMail/GoEdit setup..... your choice. After you have entered everything correctly, press F10 key to save your settings or changes and exit. I keep all my archivers in a directory called C:\TOOLS as you can see above, and this directory is listed in my path statement. You should try to have as much archiver program as you can get, because you never know when a packet compressed in another archiver format will come to your system, so be ready just incase. If GoMail does not found the right directory where your archivers are located, you can change the above directories to reflect the directories where you have your archivers either in groups or individually. SUMMARY or CONCLUSION ===================== In conclusion or summary following is the necessary steps and procedures to add a HUB/Node, New Private Networks or Echomails message conferences from your HUB or Node to your GOMail setup and Wildcat! BBS: 1. Create the necessary each echomail conferences in your Wildcat! BBS by means of Makewild. Each conference must be created for each echomail conference you wish to offer or echo on your board. 2. Define Node info for the HUB and Fido Echo tagnames for each conference in your AREAS.BBS. Make sure all the informations are entered correctly as seen on each screen in this documentation. All the necessary addresses and origin line must be well defined as seen in the examples. 3. Run or execute GOMAIL SCAN TOSS from GOMail directory i.e. C:\GOMAIL for GOMail to update its database with the new AREAS.BBS. You must do this each time you edit your AREAS.BBS. Your AREAS.BBS must be located in your GOMail directory. AREAFIX NETMAIL MESSAGE INFORMATION =================================== After you have obtained your Node address and you have configure your Mail tosser e.g. GOMail, Hypermail!, WildMail, Interecho, you will need to found out from your NC who will be your HUB, as stated in the "Frequently asked Questions and Answers". Then you will need to obtain an AREAFIX Password from the HUB, then you will have to send a Netmail to AREAFIX to turn ON or OFF the echos that you will want. The procedures are analyzed in the README.TXT and you should seek more help from your HUB if you need it, but I think I have tried my best to cover the whole procedures needed to request your echos thru AREAFIX from your HUB. Your HUB will instruct you when to send the AREAFIX message to him. The setup is not too bad right? God Bless. Praise be to Allah. -------- end --------
