4GFAOVL.ZIP - Wish there was an easier way!! WHAT ARE OVL FILES FOR? To keep EXE size as small as possible, many languages use overlays. Basically, this is where 'stuff' is stored that tells your machine what to do. The EXE file calls the 'stuff' from the overlay that is needed and you have a program (hopefully). To run most of NoTiE Software's programs, you will need one of the 4 overlays in this ZIP and it needs to be named GFABASIC.OVL - I also use dBase, PDQ w/QBasic and Visual Basic for other stuff, but I prefer to work in GFA whenever I can. Try it some time and you'll see what I mean. You can port from DOS to Windows easily, has great graphics support, mice, - good game language. You need to know the following about the 4 OVL files: You only need ONE! Which one? Beats me. If ALL machines were the same, I could tell you the answer. ONE of these OVL files should work the BEST for you and YOUR machine. The one currently named GFABASIC.OVL works on my 486/40 with math co- processor just fine but might not work for you, or may just be very slow. There are 4 of these overlays included here and each is 'tweaked' for different machine's "personalities". If you have any trouble running any of the utilities I write, first try another one of these overlay files before calling me to complain. Simply rename one at a time to GFABASIC.OVL and try re-running the EXE. One of the four should work fine. You can keep the OVL that works for you WITH the EXE file, or if you are running more than one of my utilities/games, etc., simply put the OVL that works for you in your PATH somewhere (I keep GFABASIC.OVL in my DOS directory). This way you can run anything I write and not have to deal with this OVL deal again. For YEARS now, the GFA folks have promised a version of their software that does not require an overlay, but so far have not delivered, so GFA programmers have to sheepishly try to explain this confusing OVL stuff to users of our software. If you have any problems with this, please do not cloud up and rain on me! Instead, call the Gator Gulch TBBS and I'll try to help out. Our main number is 904/746-6542.
