I. TO PRINT OUT THESE INSTRUCTIONS:
You can send these instruction files to your printer. Type PRINTME
followed by a P to send to a printer (P must be in capitals).
PRINTME P Will send instructions to your printer
README.TXT is a text version of these instructions. You can load this
file into your favorite word processor and read or print the file from
there.
II. SPECIAL LOADING COMMANDS
For complete instructions regarding loading and starting the game from a
floppy disk or hard drive refer to the instructions found in your Maxell
package.
SOUNDBOARD USERS:
Adlib soundboard users must load Adlib's sound.com driver BEFORE
running the program (supplied with your Adlib board). Type
SOUND.COM at the prompt and then press ENTER. Adlib compatible
boards are not supported. Other supported
soundboards -- Roland MT-32 & CMS boards are detected automatically.
Music is played during the Fly-Bys only.
MOUSE USERS:
PGA TOUR Golf only supports Microsoft compatible
mouse drivers. Your mouse driver must be loaded
prior to playing PGA TOUR Golf.
III. STARTING THE TOURNAMENT AND ENDING THE GAME
Your first stop is the Pro Shop. Maxell's Special Edition lets you start
during the final moments of THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP by selecting the
Tournament option from the Play menu. The other features that are
shaded such as Driving Range, Putting Green, Save Game, certain
selections from the other gaming menus, and all of the selections from
the Options menu are only available in the full retail version.
To exit the program: Select Quit from the Play menu while in the Pro
Shop.
To exit while playing the Tournament: 1) Select the PGA TOUR Tent
feature from the Go To menu; 2) Select Quit from the Play menu. Pressing
the ESC key twice will also exit you from the program.
For complete instructions regarding cursor control and menu selection
refer to the instructions included in the Maxell box.
IV. A PLAYER'S GUIDE TO PGA TOUR GOLF
Let's play the 16th hole at TPC at Sawgrass to show you the basics of
the game.
1) From the Pro Shop, select the Tournament option from the Play menu.
2) Type your name and select OK at the Player's Card.
3) An overhead shot of TPC at Sawgrass, an introduction screen to
THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP, and the current Leader Board screen will
appear. Press the spacebar, joystick or mouse button to move past
these screens.

4) Next, a panoramic helicopter fly-by shot will give you your first
view of the 16th hole. PGA TOUR Pro Bruce Lietzke shares some
valuable advice. Every hole in PGA TOUR Golf has a fly-by with
advice from one of our 10 featured PGA TOUR Pros!
5) The overhead view screen will come up and give you vital info
about the hole. The flashing dot on the left is the tee where you
start and on the far right is the green. This view will come up
before every shot of more than 85 yards to show you where your ball
has travelled.
6) Now it's time to hit the ball. But first, from left to right,
a description of the Wind Gauge, the Stroke Bar, Info Box, and the
Aiming Cross Hair (flashing in the middle of the screen).
Wind Gauge: The rotating arrow indicates the wind speed and
direction. Adjust the club, direction, and strength of your
strokes to compensate for the wind.
Stroke Bar: The bar that is just under the golfer lets you control
the power and accuracy of your swing and displays the distance
potential of the club currently selected (currently 260 since you
have a driver and are teed up). See item 7 below for a complete
description of this feature.
Info Box: Displays which hole you're on, the par for the hole,
number of strokes taken this hole, your current round score (over
or under par), current distance from the hole, and the current club
selected.
TO SELECT A DIFFERENT CLUB: MOUSE -- move the cursor into the Info
Box and click either mouse button; JOYSTICK -- move the joystick up
or down to change clubs; KEYBOARD -- press the up or down arrows on
the keypad to change clubs.
Aiming Cross Hair: Indicates the direction the ball will travel if
well hit.
TO CHANGE THE POSITION OF THE CROSS HAIR: MOUSE -- move the cursor
to the direction you want and click the right mouse button;
JOYSTICK -- move the joystick left or right; KEYBOARD -- press the
left or right arrows ( <-- or --> ) on the keypad.
7) Hitting the ball:
A) First aim the cross hair. At the 16th tee move the cross hair
about an inch to the right so you will clear the trees and
remain in the fairway.
B) To hit the ball you need to press the Stroke Button (spacebar,
joystick button 1, or left mouse button) three times in
succession. The first press (1) starts your backswing; the
second (2) ends your backswing and determines the power of your
shot; the third (3) hits the ball and determines whether the
shot will hook, slice, or travel straight.

(1) Press the Stroke Button to start your backswing. The
Power Bar quickly appears and moves left from the Accuracy
Point, indicating the growing strength of your backswing.
(2) Press the Stroke Button to Stop your backswing. Each club
has a Distance Potential which appears in a box to the
left of the Stroke Bar. The percentages below the Bar
indicate the percent of the total Distance Potential you
want to use. When the Power Bar reaches the strength you
want, press the Stroke Button. The Bar will begin to
shrink back toward the Accuracy Point (a small line marks
the point where you stopped the Power Bar).
So, if you want to hit the ball the Distance Potential of
260 yards you would stop the Power Bar at the 100% line.
To hit less than 260 yards, stop the power bar at a
smaller percentage. If the Power Bar goes beyond the 100%
line any errors you make when you hit the ball (see item 3
below) will be exaggerated.
The Distance Potential listed does not take into account
the current wind situation. This distance also reflects
the distance the shot will travel if it lands, and rolls,
in the fairway. Landing in the rough or sand will greatly
reduce the distance travelled by the shot.
(3) Press the Stroke Button to hit the ball. To hit the ball
straight, press the Stroke Button when the Power Bar
returns to the Accuracy Point. If you stop the Bar before
the Accuracy Point, the ball will hook to the left. If
you hit the Stroke Button after the Bar has moved beyond
(to the right of) the Accuracy Point, the ball will slice
to the right.
SPECIALTY SHOTS
PGA TOUR Golf lets you hit three types of unique shots on the course:
Chip Shot, Punch Shot, and the Fringe Putt. Select these shots from the
Special Shots feature under the Options menu.
1) Punch Shot: Use when your ball is half-buried in the deep rough,
under a tree, or any other time you have a poor ball lie.
2) Chip Shot: Use when the ball is close to the green or on the
fringe. The strategy of the shot is to hit the ball just on to the
green and let it roll the rest of the way to the hole.
3) Fringe Putt: Used when the ball is just on the outside rim of the
green. The grass is higher here than on the green itself so
remember to hit your Fringe Putt harder.
PUTTING
Okay, you made it to the green in good shape. Well, for a lot of TOUR
Pros, this is where the real game begins. PGA TOUR Pros spend years
learning to "read" greens. PGA TOUR Golf provides you with a unique 3-D
topographical grid of each green to let you learn to read the greens as
well as any PGA TOUR Pro.
Once the grid is displayed, use the F1 & F2 keys to rotate the grid
left & right. Note the elevation (above or below) between the ball
and the cup as well as the distance. This information is printed
above the Grid View. Allign the ball to the hole with the Aiming
Cursor based on how you "read" the green's slopes and undulations.
The Grid View will come up automatically any time you are within 30
yards of the green. Consider the Chip Shot if you are off the green.
For putting, use the Stroke Bar in the same way you would hit a drive.
However, you can change the Distance Potential of your putter up or
down in the same manner you change clubs. Select the putting strength
necessary so that you can hit most of your putts at or near 100%. For
instance, if you are 10 feet from the hole and your current Distance
Potential is 20 feet, you will have more time to hit the Stroke Button
accurately if you shorten the Distance Potential to 15 or 10 feet.
V. THE FINAL MOMENTS OF THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP
While in the Tournament you can view the Leader Board from under the View
menu to see where you stand in the pack. You can also view your stats by
selecting Current Players from under the Stats menu. PGA TOUR Golf keeps
exactly the same statistics the real TOUR does.
Shaded items in various menus of this Maxell Special Edition version of
PGA TOUR Golf either come up automatically, like the Overhead and Ball
Lie, or are only available in the full retail version.
It's been a thrilling fourth round of Tournament action here at THE
