KUWAIT A Time-Line History 1897 Obtained status as British protectorate when threatened by Turks. 1930 Oil discovered (20% of worlds reserves). 1946 Became worlds second largest oil producer. 1961 Kuwait becomes independant of Britain. Iraq immediately attempts to occupy Kuwait; British troups return. Shortly after, Arab League troups replace British. 1966 Sheik Sabah designates his relative, Jaber al-Ahmad al-Sabah as his successor. 1968 Establishes a model welfare state. 1980 Supports Iraq in war with Iran. Terrorist activity against Kuwait begins. 1987 Seeks U.S. protection for it's tankers under attack by Iran. 1990 In July, Iraq blames Kuwait for falling oil prices.
