FONT INSTALLATION FOR: ------------------------------- Ventura Publisher - Gem Edition & Windows 3.0 - All Applications ------------------------------- We recommend that you print this file so you will have a hard copy to guide yourself during installation. All files necessary for proper installation of your fonts in Windows Ventura Publisher (GEM) and CorelDraw! are included in this disk. File Naming Convention: VGA = Screen font for Ventura FON = Screen font for Windows PFB = Type 1 (Binary) Printer Font AFM = Adobe Font Metrics (used by CorelDraw's WFNBOSS to convert Type1 to WFN) PFM = Font metrics for Windows VFM = Font metrics for Ventura WID = Width table for Ventura LST = List file to create Width table using VFMTOWID.EXE (this utility is found in Utilities disk of Ventura) AFTER YOU HAVE EXTRACTED THE FILES FROM AFONT.EXE YOU SHOULD COPY ALL FILES TO A FLOPPY DISK. ANY DISK WILL HAVE ENOUGH SPACE TO HOLD ALL THIS FILES. ******************************************************* INSTALLING FONTS FOR WINDOWS ******************************************************* NOTE: PRINTER FONTS FILES ARE THE SAME FOR BOTH VENTURA AND WINDOWS IF YOU DON'T HAVE ADOBE TYPE MANAGER DO THE FOLLOWING: Step 1: Insert diskette in drive A: or B: Step 2: Copy PRINTER FONTS files to the PSFONTS directory command: COPY A:*.PFB C:\PSFONTS Step 3: Copy FONT METRICS files to your PSFONTS directory command: COPY A:*.PFM C:\PSFONTS Step 4: Run Notepad or your favorite text editor and edit the WIN.INI file. Step 5: Open your WIN.INI file Step 6: Go to the heading [PostScript,XXX] where XXX is your printer port. (LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, COM1, COM2, or FILE) If these are the first softfonts you are installing go to Step 7. If you already have softfonts installed proceed to Step 9. Step 7: Add the following lines: softfonts=1 softfont1=C:\PSFONTS\AFUTBLK_.PFM,C:\PSFONTS\AFUTBLK_.PFB Step 8: Save the WIN.INI file once you have entered these lines. Step 9: If you already have softfonts installed you should enter the lines in Step 7, but number the softfonts accordingly. For example: If you have 4 fonts installed, the new font would become softfont5. Now softfonts=5 at the top of the list. Step 10: You should enter the above lines for every PostScript port listing in your WIN.INI so if you change printer ports your fonts are always available. The printer fonts are installed and ready to be used. Step 11: Exit Windows and restart it so the new font information becomes effective. Step 12: Install screen fonts. From Windows run Control Panel. Step 13: Click on the FONTS icon. Step 14: Choose ADD... and choose either A: or B: depending on the drive you are using. Step 15: Windows will read the disk information and show you the files available. Step 16: Click on the file with the extension .FON and choose OK. The screen fonts will be added and will show in the display box. You may choose NOT to install the screen fonts to save disk space. The printer fonts work regardless of the screen fonts being installed or not. ****************************************************** INSTALLING FONTS WITH ADOBE TYPE MANAGER ****************************************************** Step 1: Start ATM Control and click on ADD... Step 2: Click on the drive and/or directory where your font is located. Step 3: Click on the font name and click on ADD... The font is installed automatically in your win.ini in all the ports you have listed, and the font numbers are updated. Step 4: Open the WIN.INI using a text editor such as notepad. Step 5: Go to the line that mentions the font you just installed and add a comma (,) and c:\psfonts\afutblk_.pfb to indicate where to find the printer font. Ex: softfontX=c:\psfonts\afutblk_.pfm,c:\psfonts\afutblk_.pfb ATM adds fonts to the WIN.INI as if they were pre-downloaded to the printer. If you would like to download the font prior to printing, don't add the line above. ****************************************************** INSTALLING FONTS FOR VENTURA (GEM) ****************************************************** Step 1: Insert diskette in drive A: or B: Step 2: Copy PRINTER FONTS files to the PSFONTS directory command: COPY A:*.PFB C:\PSFONTS Step 3: Copy WIDTH TABLES files to your VENTURA directory command: COPY A:*.WID C:\VENTURA Step 4: Copy SCREEN FONTS to your VENTURA directory command: COPY A:*.VGA C:\VENTURA NOTE: if you are using screen fonts with a different file extension, such as PSF you may copy the files and rename them after or you may copy and rename at the same time. example: COPY A:*.VGA C:\VENTURA\*.PSF Step 5: Run Ventura and click on the Options menu Step 6: Choose ADD/REMOVE FONTS... Step 7: Choose MERGE WIDTH TABLES. A dialog box with a list of the WID files available will pop-up Step 8: Choose AFUTBLK_.WID and click OK. Ventura will take a few seconds to merge the Width Tables. Step 9: Once you have finished click on SAVE AS NEW WIDTH TABLE. You may choose a new name or overwrite the existing width table. Your fonts are now installed and available. You don't have to exit Ventura to use them. ***************************************************** INSTALLING FONTS FOR CORELDRAW! 1.21 & 2.0 ***************************************************** You should copy the AFM file to your PSFONTS directory to improve the speed. You may install from the floppy disk but it is not advisable because WFNBOSS keeps that information and the next time you convert a Type1 font it will look in you floppy drive, giving an error if it is empty. Step1: Start Windows and Run WFNBOSS which should be located in your CorelDraw! directory. Step2: Click on the Conversion Type box until Adobe Type 1 shows. Step3: The Source Directory should be the one where both PFB and AFM files are located (PSFONTS). CorelDraw! does not use PFM's in the conversion. If you want to change the Source Directory click on NEW DIR and choose the right one. Step4: The Destination Directory should be the one where CorelDraw! fonts are. This option is gray and may not be changed from within WFNBOSS. You may change by editing the file WFNBOSS.INI Step5: Once you have chosen the right directory, the available files are displayed in the box named Available Fonts. Step6: Click on the one you want to convert, AFUTBLK_. Step7: The CorelDraw Name may be changed if you wish. There is no reason to do so. Step8: The File Name defaults to the PFB file name with the extension WFN. You may change this name if there is a conflict with other files. We try to name our fonts in a fashion that does not conflict with other files. All our fonts start with an "A" followed by a font specific 3 letter code. Step9: Click on CONVERT. Another dialog box appears showing the Postscript font name. Just click OK. The conversion will start. You can see the progress at the bottom, in the status box. Step10: If you are using CORELDRAW! version 1.21 you have to exit Windows and restart it so the information becomes effective. This is because the INI information is contained in the WIN.INI. If you have version 2.0, you don't have to exit Windows. Version 2.0 uses its own independent CORELDRW.INI. If you had CorelDraw! running when the conversion was done, just exit CorelDraw! and restart it. Now the font is available and you'll find it at the bottom of the font list If you alphabetize your fonts, use Notepad to edit CORELDRW.INI and move the font line to the proper location, around the "F's".
