Thank you for trying out D-MAN. Please note that this is a shareware program. If you find it useful, please send a $15 registration fee to the author: I. F. Carlstrom 2769 Derbyshire Rd. Cleveland Hts., OH 44106 Registered members will receive the latest version, more complete documentation, and certain other files and utilities that might be found useful. I am well aware that most people consider documentation something to be placed in a corner and never read. As far as possible, D-MAN was written to accommodate such an attitude. Some help is available in the program by pressing the HELP key {F3}. Otherwise, considerable attempt was made to make familiar methods work. One caution should be noted! Use a CANCEL key {F1 or ESC} to avoid taking action. As is common in current software, the EXIT key {F7} forces the action to be taken. For example, you might highlight a directory and press the ERASE key. You would be asked permission to delete the directory and its contents. If you are only exploring, press the CANCEL key at this point! Don't press the EXIT key and erase your directory. D-MAN has many competitors. Even if you (alas!) come to prefer some other system for many of your file management tasks, note some of the special features of D-MAN. You may find that it makes it very easy to carry out certain tasks. The file display is also quite unique. Various colors are used to indicate the non-printing characters. The resulting displays will be colorful, informative, and fun to look at. You will find that you can learn a lot about the ways that data files are organized by application programs. Check out the PROJECTS section of the documentation. Here are some suggestions of ways that a directory manager could be used to carry out more complex tasks. If a word processing file became damaged and could no longer be loaded, it could be valuable indeed to be able to use D-MAN to recover the data. Hopefully you will find D-MAN sufficiently useful to be worth the registration fee and will support the continuation of this project. The development of a complex shareware program such as D-MAN takes hundreds of hours. This is initially a labor of hope, as well as a fascination with the project itself. In the end it is your support that makes such projects even dimly practical. If you have supported other shareware projects, I thank you on behalf of all who have kept this concept alive. If you choose to support this project, I would be particularly grateful.
