           К The  British  Crown Colony of Hong Kong is situated К
           К on the southern coast of Kwangtung province, China. К
           К Hong Kong Island was ceded by China in  1842  after К
           К its  defeat in the first Opium War.  In 1860, after К
           К the second Opium War, the peninsula of  Kowloon  on К
           К the mainland was added to the colony, and in 1898 a К
           К large area beyond Kowloon together  with  the  sur- К
           К rounding islands, known as the the New Territories, К
           К was leased to Great Britian  for  99  years.   This К
           К lease expires on July 1, 1997, when the whole of theК
           К colony will be  restored  to  Chinese  sovereignty. К
