Since the manual was printed we have added some new features and made some changes to Cadenza. The First change is that Cadenza comes on only one disk. You MUST use the Casetup program to produce a working copy of cadenza. Another change is the addition of a pan control for each track on the track sheet. The third change is the addition of a Tap Tempo feature. Tap Tempo allows you to record a composition without the metronome and then later create a tempo map. This is useful when trying to add sequenced part to a previously recorded tape or when doing an improvisation. To use tap tempo, you record your first track without the metronome. Next you record a Tap track by playing a note on your midi keyboard (or controller) along with the previously recorded track. Once you've recorded the tap track, you then select the 'Tap Tempo' selection from the Conductor menu. Fill in the subdivision of the beat you used (quarter note, eighth, etc.) and then select 'OK'. Cadenza will then construct a tempo map based on your tap track! Erase the Tap track; it will be out of sync and isn't needed anymore. Now you can continue to record tracks with the metronome on at the freeform tempo. The other changes affect SMPTE Sync operation. One is the support of new features that Music Quest MQX-32M now have, namely a higher clock tick rate and support for the 24 and 25 frames per second SMPTE rates. The second change is in the way that Cadenza deals with SMPTE frame rates on playback. Cadenza now shows the SMPTE time when trying to chase SMPTE. Cadenza also lets you use the GOTO command to goto the absolute SMPTE time as well as from the time relative to the start of the song. SMPTE offset and Sync Delay are also saved in SONG and SETUP files. The Sync Option allows SMPTE time to be displayed in absolute or relative mode. Absolute time is tape time. Relative is time from beginning of sequence. Supports ega monochrome. The Environment string VIDTYPE can be set to EGAMONO to force the mode. NEW FEATURES ============================================================================ New Transpose Features ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- The transpose feature now includes some new features that will allow you to perform more complex changes than the old command. The dialog now includes an 'Amount' selection and a 'From-To' selection. The Amount selection allows you to transpose in half steps. For instance, you want to transpose down one whole step you would enter '-2' since one whole step is 2 half steps. The From-To selection is more powerful than the Amount selection. It lets you limit both the range of notes transposed and the range of the notes that result from the transposition. If you enter a backwards range into the To range Cadenza will invert the notes transposed. New high resolution tick rate available to Music Quest MQX-32 owners!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 240 ppqn is now supported. The option will only appear in the dialog box if the MIDI card supports it. New SMPTE frame rates available to Music Quest MQX-32 owners!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 24 and 25 fps SMPTE rate are now supported. There are no feature bits to indicate support for the new rates. If user's card does not have the rates, then they simply won't work. SMPTE is now easier to use!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- In the past, it was necessary to tell Cadenza which frame rate the SMPTE stripe on your tape was. This is no longer necessary. Cadenza now determines the frame rate by reading the tape. Due to this welcome change, the radio buttons in the SMPTE version of the Sync box are gone. The frame rate is now specified when you stripe the tape and frame rate buttons have been added the Stripe dialog box. PAN added to the track sheet!!!!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Since adding volume to the track sheet we have been asked 'why not add pan, too'. Well, O.K., we have! Enjoy! M Command Line Options --------------------------------------------------------------------------- When you start Cadenza with the 'M' Option (ex- CADENZA M) it will treat your MIDI Interface as a standard MPU-401 even if it is a Music Quest or similar interface with advanced capabilities. This is necessary because some cards, CMS is one we know of, behave differently from the MPU-401 and the Music Quest Cards. These cards can fail to initialize when used with the older versions of Cadenza. MIDIFILE Import Changes --------------------------------------------------------------------------- When Cadenza was previously asked to import a MIDIFILE and there wasn't enough room for either the whole song or any single track, Cadenza would refuse to load the file and return to a 'NEW' song state. Cadenza will now read as much of the MIDIFILE as possible, warning you when a track is too long or if it ran out of memory. Previous versions of Cadenza also had problems with importing MIDIFILES with a lot of tempo changes properly. Cadenza now will handle tempo changes in MIDIFILES properly. MOUSE Problems --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Previous versions of Cadenza had problems with certain older Mouse Drivers and certain 'generic' Taiwanese mouses. The mouse cursor would not be drawn properly. This was not a problem with Microsoft, Logitec, Genius or other brand-name mouses unless their driver software was out of date. In the case of an out of date driver, upgrading to a newer mouse driver always solved the problem. However, it is impossible for some of you to upgrade because you can't reach the manufacturer, expecially with Taiwanese mouses. We have implemented a solution that works with many of these old mouses. If you have had problems in the past and couldn't upgrade your mouse software, try your mouse with this new version. It should work fine. If it doesn't you still need to find a newer mouse driver, because we've done all we can. Better MIDI File Support --------------------------------------------------------------------------- MIDIFILE tracks that are too large to fit in one track will overflow to the next track. This limited to one overflow track per midi file track. But you should be able to read and play MIDI Files that previously caused problems. New Controller 0 Name --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Controller 0 is now named BANK SELECT to reflect the change in the MIDI spec. R Command Line Options --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This option tells the MIDI card not to send MIDI real-time messages out the MIDI Port. Real Time Messages include MIDI Time Code (sent in SMPTE MODE) and MIDI Start, Stop and Clock messages. This is helpful with keyboards that have internal sequencers that you can't set a parameter to keep from playing. If you are using an M1 or M1R it will keep you from getting strange notes when locked to SMPTE.
