INSTRUCTIONS How do I select and edit a function? 1) From the main menu, select option 'D' to edit F(x). 2) Use the up and down arrow keys to select one of five function types. 3) Use the left and right arrow keys to select constants that you wish to change. Look at the bottom of the editing screen to tell you what size and type of constant you may enter. Notice that at the top of the editing screen a simplified version of your function is written and updated as you change various constants. After you write a constant using the number keys, you may enter it by either pressing a right or left arrow key or by pressing the enter key. It is usually faster to use the arrow keys. Multiplying a term by zero makes it disappear. Raising a variable to the zero power makes it disappear and it is replaced by one. When you enter a coefficient to a large number of significant digits, it is rounded for presentation on the screen but the full accuracy is retained for calculating the values of the function. Exponents must be entered as either single digit integers or as the fraction of two single digit integers such as -3/2. You cannot enter decimal exponents. *************************** IMPORTANT **************************** On some menu screens and displays, there are no instructions about what to do after you finnish with the menu or display. If there are no instructions, press the enter key! Pressing the enter key either once or twice will allow you to continue on with the program. ****************************************************************** 4) You can edit G(x) in the same way as F(x). After you have edited F(x) and G(x), select H(x) by using the up and down arrow keys. How do I save my work and manipulate the math function files? 1) It is often a good idea to create a new file and load it before you start editing and plotting functions. Do this by selecting option 'I' from the main menu. Then, select option '1' from the file menu which is labeled 'Create'. You will be asked to enter a name for your new file. After you enter the name, the new file name is listed with the other files. Load your file by pressing the return key. You are then returned to the main menu. The name of the file currently loaded appears on the main menu in option 'J' which is the save option. Remember this, when you create a file the contents of whatever file is currently loaded will be the contents of the newly created file. After the file is created, you may edit and save your new file as you please. 2) Load an existing file by selecting option 'I' from the main menu. Then, use the arrow keys to highlight the desired file. If you press any one of the following keys: 4 (Load), 5 (Main menu) or enter, the file is automatically loaded and you are returned to the main menu with the name of the selected file appearing in option 'J'. (There is no particular advantage to using any of the three loading methods but it seems to help people get started.) 3) There are two ways to save a file. The first way is to select option 'J' from the main menu. The second way is to select option 'K' from the main menu which allows you to change plot parameters. When you return to the main menu from this option, the current file is automatically saved. The 'STANDARD' file is an exception. It cannot be saved or deleted. 4) Delete a file by selecting option 'I' from the main menu. Then, use the arrow keys to highlight the file that you wish to delete. Press the delete option number at this point and the file is automatically deleted. If you delete the 'DEFAULT' file, it will not appear to be deleted. However, its contents have been deleted and its new contents are that of the 'STANDARD' file. 5) Rename a file by selecting option 'I' from the main menu. Then, use the arrow keys to highlight the file that you wish to rename. Then, press the rename option number. At this point, you are asked to enter a name to replace the old one. After you enter the name, the changed file name will appear among the others and the old name will be gone. How might I start using the program? From the main menu, do the following: 1) Calibrate the screen by selecting option 'C'. 2) Select option 'I' which gives you the file menu then create a file. 3) Select option 'D'. Select and edit F(x). 4) Select option 'E' and then select and edit G(x). 5) Select option 'F' and then select H(x). 6) Select option 'K'. Change the various plotting parameters including the type of coordinate grid as seems appropriate for your functions. 7) Select option 'N' to automatically plot F(x), G(x) and H(x). 8) Save your function file using option 'J'. Sometimes it is desirable to terminate a plot if it is not turning out to be the desired one. A plot may be terminated by pressing the enter key. Option 'P' from the main menu draws various geometric figures. Press the enter key to freeze a figure. Press enter again to return to the main menu.
