FACTS ABOUT THE DX AUDIO SERVICE The DX AUDIO SERVICE is a monthly mail-delivered cassette, produced by radio professionals who donate their time as a service to the blind and housebound. For the blind and the housebound, radio can be a lifeline to news, entertainment and contact with the outside world. Each 90-minute cassette is produced in the style of a broadcast news program about radio, with several friendly hosts, traveling reporters, phoned-in messages and lively sounds. It's purpose is to help you get the most out of your radio, by encouraging reception of different and distant stations, and providing interesting background about those stations. The DX Audio Service is sponsored by the National Radio Club, Inc. The National Radio Club was founded over fifty years ago, in 1933, and is a charter member of the Association of North American Radio Clubs (ANARC). The National Radio Club is a nonprofit organization devoted to AM-band DXing. (DXing is an old radio term for tuning in stations beyond your local area). As you may already know, AM signals can travel long distances at night. Under the right conditions, it is not uncommon to hear stations hundreds or even thousands of miles away. And though the AM band isn't as popular as it used to be, you'll find much more diversity of programming there than in the pop-music saturated FM band - sports, talk-shows, ethnic programs, etc. The DX Audio Service also discusses issues of importance to the FM, Television, and Shortwave DX hobby, as well as amateur radio, aircheck collecting and many other radio type topics. Like the DX Audio Service, (which began in April 1985), the National Radio Club is operated solely by volunteers. Subscriptions only cover the printing, postage, tapes, and operational costs. The DX Audio Service is not a typical "talking book." It is a polished "sound magazine." Much of the recorded material is contributed on tape from locations around the U.S. and the world. On several occasions, material has been fed to the DX Audio Service studios in Lima via satellite. The DX Audio Service also has a telephone system like national talk show hosts use to conduct interviews. Recently the DX Audio Service opened a DX Audio Service "ACTION LINE," which allows members to deliver phone messages and reports right up to the start of studio production. Each quarter, the DX Audio Service also produces a series of cassettes called "After Dark" which is a four cassette supplement to the regular service, containing material not normally covered in the regular DX Audio Service. This special release contains long interviews and discussions in unedited form, without interruption. DX Audio Service members also have access to information and products available from the National Radio Club Publications Center. Each DX Audio Service tape begins with News and Information presented by DX Audio Service editor, and founder, Fred Vobbe. Fred also provides a run down of the latest news as it pertains to the DX hobby. Next up is Jerry Starr's "AM SWITCH," where you learn about license applications for new stations, call-letter changes, and so on. Phil Wayne provides "MARKET-SCOPE," a guided tour of different radio markets and profiles of stations. John Bowker then presents the "TRAVEL-LOG," where you hear recordings of stations you may never have heard from where you live. Wayne Heinen checks in via telephone with the latest C.P.C. Tests from the Courtesy Program Committee. C.P.C. Tests are tests conducted by stations between the hours of midnight and 6 AM for the purpose of trying to receive the station. Finally, producer Fred Vobbe conducts interviews and discussions, reads articles, responds to mail and phone messages, and much more. Here is how someone can subscribe to the DX Audio Service.
