Artisoft Technical Bulletin Updated: 10.15.93 DF Installing LANtastic 5.0 in an OS/2 2.0 or 2.1 VDM Page 1 of 3 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ [This will work for both HPFS and FAT16 file systems] NOTE:  Network adapter card must be in 8-bit mode [if you have ServicePak XR06055 for 2.0 or are using 2.1 it 'may' be possible to run in 16 bit mode]  Cannot net use own resources from the VDM  Cannot use as a print server  Server must be installed with the NO_5D switch - SERVER/NO_5D if using OS/2 v2.1  File and record locking does not work with OS/2 v2.1  File and record locking works with FAT16 file system ONLY with OS/2 v2.0 [no file and record locking with HPFS] At a DOS machine: 1. Make a bootable floppy w/COMMAND.COM. Any size diskette will work. 2. Create the following CONFIG.SYS on the floppy [other devices may be included, but these are necessary]: DEVICE=FSFILER.SYS FILES=50 BUFFERS=32 LASTDRIVE=Z FCBS=16,8 3. Create the following autoexec.bat on the floppy: @echo off prompt $p$g call startnet At the OS/2 machine: 4. Open a DOS window by doing the following: a. Double click the OS/2 system icon. b. Double click Command Prompts. c. Double click DOS Window Icon. 5. Change to the directory c:\os2\mdos. 6. Copy FSFILTER.SYS to the floppy. [File should be dated 5/93 or higher. Available on Arti-Facts BBS 602-884-8648] 7. Execute the following command: VMDISK X: C:\\. Where: X: = drive letter of floppy. PATH = directory path to filename. FILENAME = name of IMAGE file. ex: VMDISK A: C:\OS2\MDOS\DOSMACH.IMG (This step creates the virtual dos image file) 8. Insert the first LANtastic installation floppy and unpack all the files to a temporary directory on the C: drive (Example: A:INSTALL UNPACK/ALL C:\TEMPDIR) 9. Type EXIT to go back to the OS/2 desktop. 10. Click the right mouse button on the DOS Window Icon to bring up icon menu. 11. Click on COPY to create a new icon for the DOS VDM. 12. Click on the New Name box and enter a name for the icon (ex: DOS VDM). 13. Click on copy to create the icon. 14. Click the right mouse button on the new icon to bring up icon menu. 15. Click the ARROW next to the OPEN menu option to bring up Settings menu. 16. Click on SETTINGS to bring up Settings window. 17. Click on Session to bring up Session parameters. 18. Click on DOS Settings to bring up DOS Settings window. 19. Click on DOS_STARTUP_DRIVE. 20. Click on value box and type in the drive:\path\filename as created in step 7. 21. Click on SAVE. 22. Double click on the upper left corner of the DOS Settings window. 23. Double click on the icon for the DOS VDM. (You'll get a bad command or filename error) 24. Change to the temporary directory where the Lantasti files were copied. (C:\TEMPDIR) 25. Run the LANTASTI install program and do the following: Enter a Machine name Machine type: Server or Workstation depending on user. Installation directory: C:\LANTASTI Network Startup Batch File: Build - A:\STARTNET.BAT Network Adapter Installed: (Specify adapter) Adapters Drivers to Install: (Specify adapter or ALL) Modify Config.sys: NO Printer Connections: (As needed) Disk Drive Connections: (As needed) Set Up Server With: Default Wildcard Account & Resources Server's Control Directory: A:\LANTASTI.NET (if server) Perform Installation: (Press Enter on this option to install) 26. When install completes, Double click the upper left corner of the DOS VDM window to close 27. Restart the DOS VDM window by double clicking the icon and the network should load without errors. Sharing OS/2 Resources To share resources with other nodes on the LANtastic network, be sure to modify and/or create resources so they are OS/2 type on the OS/2 server. To do this: 1. Load NET_MGR 2. Select Shared Resources Management 3. Select or create desired resources to share [@printer devices or drive resources]. 4.
