NETWORK (MULTI-USER) INSTALL FOR ALDUS PAGEMAKER 4.0 June 9, 1993 The following details a network install for Aldus Pagemaker version 4.0 with Microsoft Windows 3.1, and ARTISOFT LANtastic NOS versions 4.10 or later. This install is composed of a "Server" install and several "Workstation" install options. Check your Aldus Pagemaker license agreement to make sure you will be in compliance with their license policy. Aldus Technical Support also has a FAX-YI bulletin on a network install of Pagemaker that may also be helpful for you. Contact Aldus for further information. SERVER INSTALL 1) Make two directories on the server, NETALDUS and PM4 to hold the network Pagemaker files. MD\NETALDUS MD\PM4 2) Load Windows. 3) Insert Disk 1 of the Pagemaker program disks into the A: drive. Use the Windows' Progman File Run option to start the Pagemaker install procedure. On the run line, type the following command (substituting B: for A: if the B: drive is to be used for the installation). A:\ALDSETUP 4) When prompted, enter the path for the Aldus Product files. C:\NETALDUS 5) Highlight all options in the Select Setup Screen. Then click on the Setup button. 6) Enter the directory path for the Pagemaker program files then click on OK. C:\PM4 7) Enter the registration information and answer NO to modifying the Autoexec.bat file. 8) Select All filters (If you know only a few filters will be needed by ALL stations then selecting only those filters will save disk space and help improve Pagemaker performance). 9) When prompted, select All Postscript templates and ALL PCL templates. ** the setup program will now copy all files to your hard disk and complete the setup for the server. 10) Exit Windows. 11) The Pagemaker files now need to set to read-only to allow them to be shared. Change to the C:\NETALDUS directory and do the following commands. The *.sav files created will be used for the workstation setup. Do the same for the PM4 directory. CD\NETALDUS (change to Netaldus directory) ATTRIB +R *.*/S (sets all files to read-only) CD\NETALDUS\USENGLSH (change to the Usenglsh directory) COPY ALDUS.INI ALDUS.SAV (save the Aldus.ini & Aldusn.udc COPY ALDUSN.UDC ALDUSN.SAV files with .sav extensions.) ATTRIB -R *.SAV (remove read-only status from the *.sav files) CD\PM4 (change to the PM4 directory) ATTRIB +R *.*/S (sets all files to read-only) 12) Server install is complete. WORKSTATION INSTALL (for server) The workstation option does not need to be done for the server if the server is dedicated or you do not intend to run Pagemaker at the server. 1) Make the following directories on the server's hard drive. MD\ALDUS MD\ALDUS\USENGLSH 2) Copy the ALDUS.INI and the ALDUSN.UDC files to C:\ALDUS\USENGLSH Copy C:\NETALDUS\USENGLSH\ALDUS.SAV C:\ALDUS\USENGLSH\ALDUS.INI Copy C:\NETALDUS\USENGLSH\ALDUSN.SAV C:\ALDUS\USENGLSH\ALDUSN.UDC 3) Change to the Windows directory on the Server (if Windows is setup to be shared on the network then change to the server's personal Windows directory). Edit the WIN.INI file and make the following changes to the [ALDUS] section (will be near the bottom of file). [ALDUS] AldusDirectory=C:\ALDUS NetAldusDirectory=C:\NETALDUS PM4LangDir=USENGLSH 4) Change to the C:\ALDUS\USENGLSH directory. Edit the ALDUS.INI file and make the following change to the [PageMaker4] section. [PageMaker4] PM4Defaults=C:\ALDUS\USENGLSH\PM4.CNF 5) Change to the root directory of the server (CD\). Edit the Autoexec.bat file and modify the path to include C:\NETALDUS and C:\PM4. previous path: PATH=C:\LANTASTI;C:\;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS new path: PATH=C:\LANTASTI;C:\;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;C:\NETALDUS;C:\PM4 6) Log off all users logged into the server and reboot the server. 7) The server is now ready to run Pagemaker. A Pagemaker group complete with Icons was created during the initial Server Install and is ready to run. WORKSTATION INSTALL (using server drive only) This option will be used for a workstation that does not have a hard-disk or has very little hard-disk space available locally. Performance will be slower since all files will be pulled from the server. 1) Log into the server and 'Net Use' a drive letter to the server's hard drive. If the workstation does not already map a drive to the server then the following lines should be added to the work- stations' Startnet.bat file to allow this to happen automatically when the workstation loads the network. NET LOGIN \\SERVER_NAME USERNAME NET USE E: \\SERVER_NAME\C-DRIVE 2) Change to server's drive and make the following directory and two Aldus subdirectories below it on the server's hard drive. Change to the E: drive before doing the following commands MD\WS1 MD\WS1\ALDUS MD\WS1\ALDUS\USENGLSH 3) Copy the ALDUS.INI and ALDUSN.UDC to the E:\WS1\ALDUS\USENGLSH directory. Copy E:\NETALDUS\USENGLSH\ALDUS.SAV E:\WS1\ALDUS\USENGLSH\ALDUS.INI Copy E:\NETALDUS\USENGLSH\ALDUSN.SAV E:\WS1\ALDUS\USENGLSH\ALDUSN.UDC 4) Change to the workstations' Windows directory. Edit the WIN.INI file and add the following lines to the Bottom of the file. [ALDUS] AldusDirectory=E:\WS1\ALDUS NetAldusDirectory=E:\NETALDUS PM4LangDir=USENGLSH 5) Change to the E:\WS1\ALDUS\USENGLSH directory. Edit the ALDUS.INI file and make the following change to the [PageMaker4] section. [PageMaker4] PM4Defaults=E:\WS1\ALDUS\USENGLSH\PM4.CNF 6) Change to the root directory of the workstation. Edit the Autoexec.bat file and modify the path to include E:\NETALDUS and E:\PM4. previous path: PATH=C:\LANTASTI;C:\;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS new path: PATH=C:\LANTASTI;C:\;C:\DOS;C:\WINDOWS;E:\NETALDUS;E:\PM4 7) Reboot the workstation and load windows. A Pagemaker group and icon now need to be created. Create Group: a) Click File on the Progman line at the top of the windows screen and select 'New'. b) Select 'Program Group'. c) Enter 'PAGEMAKER' for the description and 'PAGEMKR.GRP' for the group file name. d) The Pagemaker group is now created. Create Icon: a) Click File on the Progman line and select 'New'. b) Select 'Program Item'. c) Enter 'Pagemaker' for the description and 'E:\PM4\PM4.EXE for the command line. d) The Pagemaker icon is now created. e) To create the Table Editor Icon, do steps a-c substituting 'Table Editor' for the description and 'E:\PM4\TE.EXE' for the command line 8) The workstation is now ready to run Pagemaker. WORKSTATION INSTALL (using both the local and server hard drives) This option will be used for a workstation that has space on its hard drive. Some Pagemaker files will run from the local hard drive to improve Pagemaker performance. 1) Log into the server and 'Net Use' a drive letter to the server's hard drive. If the workstation does not already map a drive to the server then the following lines should be added to the workstations' Startnet.bat file to allow this to happen auto- matically when the workstation loads the network. NET LOGIN \\SERVER_NAME USERNAME NET USE E: \\SERVER_NAME\C-DRIVE 2) On the workstations' local drive make the following directories and sub directories. MD\PM4 MD\ALDUS MD\ALDUS\USENGLSH 3) Copy the ALDUS.INI and ALDUSN.UDC files to the C:\ALDUS\USENGLSH directory. Copy E:\NETALDUS\USENGLSH\ALDUS.SAV C:\ALDUS\USENGLSH\ALDUS.INI Copy E:\NETALDUS\USENGLSH\ALDUSN.SAV C:\ALDUS\USENGLSH\ALDUSN.UDC 4) Xcopy the Pagemaker files from the server's PM4 directories to the workstations' C:\PM4 directory. XCOPY E:\PM4\*.* C:\PM4\*.* /S 5) Change to the workstations' Windows directory. Edit the WIN.INI file and add the following lines to the bottom of the Win.ini file. [ALDUS] AldusDirectory=C:\ALDUS NetAldusDirectory=E:\NETALDUS PM4LangDir=USENGLSH 6) Change to the C:\ALDUS\USENGLSH directory.
