README FILE FOR PAPERBOY FOR WINDOWS ------------------------------------ Paperboy for windows (Paperboy) is a Windows 3.X application useful for reading offline USENET news packets. These packets are created in the SLNP/Helldiver format, usually by uqwk or getnews programs. Version 1.00 began life as a prototype, and retains many of those qualities. Error handling, performance and elegance are short in many areas, but will hopefully improve over time. INSTALLING PAPERBOY FOR WINDOWS ------------------------------- Assuming you don't have a later version (check the file's date), copy the following to \WINDOWS\SYSTEM: COMMDLG.DLL PBOYSLNP.DLL VBRUN300.DLL CMDIALOG.VBX USING PAPERBOY FOR WINDOWS -------------------------- Using either a created Program Manager Item or File, Run, start Paperboy. After a nice delay loading the VB runtime DLL, the Paperboy screen will appear. From the File menu, select Open, and point it to your AREAS file (created by breaking apart your UQWK/SLNP packet). Message groups should appear in the upper left list box. Clicking on a specific group will place the headers (if any)in the upper right list box. Clicking on any subject will bring up the message text in the bottom list box. That's basically all their is to this version of Paperboy. KNOWN BUGS/LIMITATIONS ---------------------- PBOYSLNP.DLL is rather inefficient in places, leaking memory everywhere. PBOYSLNP.DLL doesn't like to be restarted, requiring restart of Windows. Newsgroups aren't sorted. Subjects aren't threaded. Common Dialog is flying blind on AREAS. String space runs out on long messages or busy newsgroups. Doesn't do mail. Doesn't post news. Doesn't support adding/deleting groups. Won't use index files. FEEDBACK -------- Discussions concerning Paperboy's future enchancements are welcome. Email or USENET (alt.usenet.offline-reader, comp.os.msdos.mail-news, etc.) any thoughts. If you'd like to test/develop future code, let me know. Please send any bugs, comments, suggestions to me at: vart@eniac.seas.upenn.edu Good Luck! -Michael H. Vartanian
