Solution: ========= This document provides information on: - setting up credit card dialing in WinFax PRO - limiting credit card dial strings - calculating the maximum dial string for your fax/modem Setting Up Credit Card Dialing ------------------------------ Note: Credit card procedures may vary depending on your location. Check with your credit card company for more information. 1. Pull down the Fax menu in WinFax PRO, and select Program Setup. 2. In the Program Setup dialog, click the Dial button to open the Dial Setup dialog. 3. In the Card Number field, type the credit card number against which your faxing charges are to be made. Your card number appears as asterisks. 4. In the Comma Pause Time field, set the time in seconds that WinFax pauses for a comma in the dial string. For many credit cards, the optimum pause time to obtain a connection is 8 seconds. 5. Some credit cards, such as MCI and Sprint, require a 1-800 dial prefix, or other number. Type this prefix, if required, in the Dial Prefix field at the top of the dialog. Include a comma at the end of the prefix. Note: With a Unitel credit card, type the 7-digit access code and your 10-digit PIN number in the Dial Prefix field. Separate the access code and PIN by a comma. 6. Click on OK to save your credit card setup. 7. When you are ready to send your fax, open the Options section of the Send Fax dialog and perform the following: a) Enable Use Credit Card. b) Enable Use Prefix (if your credit card requires a prefix number). c) Remember to include any normal dial prefix, such as "9," to obtain an outside line. If necessary, add this prefix to the credit card prefix you specified. d) Type the fax number in the Fax field. Include the credit card long distance access code in front of the number, and a comma after the number. For example, in North America you might type ... 01 23 789 555 6789, ... to charge an overseas fax. 0 987 555 1234, ... to charge a standard long distance fax. Notes: If your version of WinFax is dated prior to April 21, 1993, do not use the recipient fax number variable (@X) in your header or cover page when sending credit card faxes. Upgrade to the WinFax PRO 3.0 maintenance release to correct this problem. See the following technical note for details: 2074 - Delrina WinFax PRO Maintenance Release Patch If you select a phonebook record, do not include the credit card long distance access code. WinFax adds the appropriate code to the fax number automatically -- "01" for international faxes, and "0" for standard long distance faxes. If your credit card requires different access codes, add the following lines with appropriate codes to the [General] section of your WINFAX.INI file: CreditCardIntlAccess= CreditCardLongAccess= If you have an Intel CAS fax/modem, run the CAS setup program to specify comma pause time. See your CAS fax/modem user documentation for details. Limiting Credit Card Dial Strings --------------------------------- The maximum dial string in WinFax is 42 characters, including dial prefix or credit card numbers. However, many fax/modems only accept dial strings of 38 characters or less. Lengthy credit card dial strings -- especially for international fax calls -- may exceed the maximum allowable for your fax/modem. When this happens, the message "No Dial Tone" appears in WinFax and the fax is not sent. To shorten dial strings, omit spaces and hyphens in the credit card number, dial prefix, and fax number. Use single commas for pauses, and set the Comma Pause Time to 8 seconds or greater. Note: If your fax/modem init string contains "&F", and the comma pause time resets to 2 seconds, add "S8=x" to the init string, where x is the comma pause time in seconds. Upgrade to the WinFax PRO 3.0 maintenance release to correct this problem. See the following technical note for details: 2074 - Delrina WinFax PRO Maintenance Release Patch Check your fax/modem user documentation or contact the manufacturer for details on dial string limitations. Calculating the Maximum Dial String for Your Fax/Modem ------------------------------------------------------ If you cannot find out the maximum dial string for your fax/modem, perform the following procedure. 1. Start the Terminal application in Windows Program Manager. (Make sure that you are not running WinFax or any other communications program.) 2. Pull down the Settings menu and select Communications, then select the COM port to which your fax/modem is connected. 3. Click on OK. 4. To test that your fax/modem is operational and communicating with Windows, type ... ATZ ... and press ENTER. If your fax/modem is working properly, the following response appears: OK 5. Type the command "ATDT" followed by 38 characters, for example: ATDT12345678901234567890123456789012345678 This simulates the dialing of a 38-character fax number. 6. Press ENTER. 7. If you hear a dial tone on the fax/modem speaker, followed by the sounds of the number being dialed, then the dial string is within the fax/modem's limitations. If the fax/modem hangs, or a message such as "No Dial Tone" appears on your screen, then the dial string exceeds the fax/modem's limitations. 8. Repeat steps #3 and #4, adding or removing a character from the dial string, until you determine the maximum acceptable dial string. The maximum number of characters you can successfully add after the ATDT command (up to 42 characters), is the maximum you can specify in the WinFax dial string.
