It controls the number of users that may run a DOS or WINDOWS executable (*.COM & *.EXE files) concurrently. You can also meter software which resides on a local hard disk, in this case the user will only be able to run the program when they are logged in to the network. LOCKER is run from a console from which you can: Add metering to a program, Change the metering limit on a program, Remove the metering from a program, See the number of active users for a program, See what the peak number of users was for a program, See the number of times a user had to wait to run a program See the number of times a user canceled out of waiting for a program to be available. You should check the licensing agreement for the software that you are installing metering on, some licensing requires that you own a copy of the software for each person who may use the software. LOCKER is NOT a substitute for purchasing the legal number of copies required. LOCKER works with most DOS networks which support DOS file sharing and locking. It has been tested with Novell's Netware, Banyan's Vines, Microsoft's LAN Manager, and with Lantastic Networks. 1.2 Requirements LOCKER requires DOS 3.3 or higher, while it may work with older versions of DOS, we cannot guarantee that it will. LOCKER adds a 3K memory overhead to running a metered DOS application. In cases where there is not enough memory to load a metered software, you should try to remove any TSR which are not needed. It is not recommended that you install metering on any memory mapping software products since you may receive an invalid result. CHAPTER 2: INSTALLATION 2.1 Upgrading You should remove metering from all programs you are currently metering. Then proceed with the normal install except you should copy the LOCKER files to a different directory than where you had your old LOCKER files. This way if there is a problem you can easily remeter using your older version of LOCKER. 2.2 New Installation This installation assumes some knowledge of DOS. If you have problems with the commands, please look them up in your DOS manual. First copy the LOCKER disk to a drive\directory where only the SUPERVISOR or NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR has access. For example: Copy A:*.* F:\SYSTEM\*.* Now change to the directory where you installed LOCKER. In the example before this would be: F: CD \SYSTEM Next run the LOCKCON program. Type: LOCKCON After starting LOCKCON you will see the following screen: ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ UPDATE: LOCKER v1.75.1 Console ³ ³ ³ ³ PEAK TOTAL ³ ³PROGRAM: TYPE: LIMIT: CURRENT: USED: WAITS: ABORTS: ACCESS: ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ ³ ³ Enter Directory Path for LOG files: ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³F2=TOGGLE UPDATE ON/OFF F4=OPTIONS ³ ³F3=UPDATE INS=Install DEL=UnInstall ENTER=Change Count ESC=Exit ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ For the log file path you should enter a directory (it does not need to currently exist) where all your users will have full access to. Fox example, if you entered F:\PUBLIC\LOCKER all your users would need to have a drive F: and have full read/write access to the F:\PUBLIC\LOCKER directory. This directory should NOT be the same as the directory where you copied the LOCKER files. Please Note: That for all paths that are entered via LOCKCON you should use the standard DOS paths not network specific paths (for example: do not use SERVER01\SYS:\PUBLIC, use instead \PUBLIC .or Z:\PUBLIC - where Z: would be a drive mapped to the volume SYS:) You have now installed LOCKER and are ready to start metering you applications. CHAPTER 3. USING LOCKER 3.1 Screen Layout and commands To run LOCKER you must either be in the directory where you installed it or it must be in your path statement. To start LOCKER at the DOS prompt type LOCKCON. This will bring up Locker's console: ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ UPDATE: ON LOCKER v1.75.1 Console ³ ³ ³ ³ PEAK TOTAL ³ ³PROGRAM: TYPE: LIMIT: CURRENT: USED: WAITS: ABORTS: ACCESS: ³ ³ TEST.EXE DOS 001 000 0000 0000 0000 0000 ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³F2=TOGGLE UPDATE ON/OFF F4=OPTIONS ³ ³F3=UPDATE INS=Install DEL=UnInstall ENTER=Change Count ESC=Exit ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ For each program being metered you will see the following information: PROGRAM: Either the program executable file name or the description TYPE: Whether a program is a DOS or WINDOWS (DOS/WIN) based LIMIT: How many users can use the program concurrently CURRENT: How many users are currently using the program PEAK USED: Peak number of concurrent users WAITS: Number of users who had to wait to access the program ABORTS: Number of users who canceled out of waiting for the program to be available TOTAL ACCESS: Number of times the program has been run From LOCKCON you can either install metering on software, change the metering limits or remove metering from software. Actions you can do from this screen: To install metering on a software product press key To highlight a displayed software product use the arrow keys To change the metering limit, first highlight the software name and then press the key. To remove metering from a software product, first highlight the software name and then press the key. To toggle on/off the updating for the LOCKCON press . The current status of the updating can be seen in the upper left corner of the LOCKCON screen To force the LOCKCON screen to refresh/update press To change the interval at which the LOCKCON screen updates press To exit from LOCKCON press 3.2 Install metering on software After pressing the key an entry screen will be displayed: ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ UPDATE: ON LOCKER v1.75.1 Console ³ ³ ³ ³ PEAK TOTAL ³ ³PROGRAM: TYPE: LIMIT: CURRENT: USED: WAITS: ABORTS: ACCESS: ³ ³ TEST.EXE DOS 001 001 0000 0000 0000 0000 ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ Add a new program to LOCKER ³ ³ ³ ³Program Name: Type: DOS Limit: 001 Scan Time: 015 Log: ON ³ ³Module Name: ³ ³Program Desc: ³ ³Program Path: ³ ³ ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ³ ESC=Abort Changes F10=Accept Changes ³ ÀÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÙ Program Name: Enter the software executable name (for example: TEST.EXE - do not include that program path). Type: You can press the to toggle the program type from DOS to WIN (i.e. a windows program). Limit: Enter the maximum number of concurrent users allowed. Scan Time: Enter how often you want the program to check to see if a license is available. Log: Use the to toggle it on and off. This field controls whether the extended log information is kept. Module name: Leave it blank unless the main program actually starts another module/program and then terminates. (Only used for windows programs) Program Desc: Enter a descriptive name for the program. This field will be displayed instead of the program name on the LOCKCON screen and when a user is notified that all concurrent licenses are in use. Program Path: Enter either the directory or the drive:\directory of where the software is located. Please note that you should have the same drive configuration each time you run LOCKCON since otherwise you may not be able to change or remove the metering. After you are finished entering the information, you can either escape from adding metering , or install the metering by pressing the key. 3.3 Changing metering limits on software After highlighting the software you wish to change the metering on and pressing the same screen as when you installed the metering will be displayed. However, you will only be able to change the user limit. After making your changes, press to accept them or to abort. 3.4 Removing metering from software After highlighting the software you wish to remove the metering from and pressing ; you will be prompted (Y/N) as to whether you really wish to remove metering. Please note, you will only be able to remove metering when the software executable is not in use. 3.5 Metering applications on Local hard drives There are two way of metering applications residing on local hard drives 1) You can either install the application on the network, install metering, and then copy all the files to the each local hard drive (Make certain you copy all hidden files which reside in the application directory) 2) Install the application on the local drive, copy the executable file to its own directory on the network, install metering on the executable on the network, and then copy the metered executable and any hidden files in the directory back to the users local drives. After changing the metering limits for applications residing on local drives you DO NOT have to redistribute the network files. After removing metering from an application residing on a local drive you must either erase all copies of the application which reside on the local drives or copy the network executable to all the local users drives. Chapter 4: ERROR MESSAGES 4.1 Common Mistakes & Problems Most of the problems will be covered by the messages below. Since LOCKER does run on a wide variety of networks, you might get a problem which is not covered below. If you do, you can call us at (800) NET-SOFT or leave a message on Compuserve to 72607,3042 and we will try to resolve your problem as fast as possible. If you are using Norton's Desktop for Windows you will need to make the .@@@ file unhidden. ex. Attrib TEST.@@@ -H For WORD PERFECT for windows, you need to copy the WPWINFIL.EXE file in the WordPerfect directory to WPWINFIL.@@@ ex. copy F:\wp51\wpwinfil.exe f:\wp51\wpwinfil.@@@ LOCKCON Error Messages: INSTALL MESSAGES Invalid Filename or Path Check to make sure that the filename and path are correct LOCKER already installed on file Metering has already been installed on the program File is in use Check the use field on the main screen. If it displays __, then your drive/path configuration has changed and LOCKER can not locate the file. Otherwise it does mean that the file is in use. The supervisor can run a metered program but the users can not. You have not granted rights to the log file path directory. (This is the directory which you entered when you first ran LOCKER. Metering was installed but the program still allows everyone to access it. The program probably starts another program and then exits. You should call technical support to see if we already know what the name should be for the module name field. You are having difficulty metering windows. You should install metering on progman.exe (its a windows program) instead of win.com or win.exe. 4.2 What not to do: DO NOT erase any hidden files which reside in the applications directory after installing metering. Locker uses these files and if they are removed prior to removing metering you will have to reinstall your original executable program. DO NOT erase the LOCKCON files before removing metering on all metered applications. The applications will still be metered after LOCKCON is removed and you will have to call technical support to remove the metering. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The following licenses for LOCKER v1.75 are available: LOCKER v1.75: USD $ 95 / server (S/H not included) We accept CHECKS, MONEY ORDERS, and MC/VISA.
