Magazine EDITORIAL³ ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄij As I sit in my mother-in-law's Tucson home, located in the foothills of the beautiful Catalina mountains...I ponder what to write for this editorial. Tucson is a beautiful place. There's nothing like a mountain to make one feel very small and insignificant. I could sit and look at these Rocky Mountain ranges of southern Arizona for hours. And the sunsets are the best I've seen anywhere. Not too far from where I sit is the Biosphere, where man has created his own little world, free of interaction and the day to day existence of the outside. Abandoned Titan missile bases sit quietly north and south of town, waiting to be dismantled and hauled off. Air raid sirens still line the streets of Tucson, just about everywhere you go one can see the yellow poles and siren heads that instantly reminded even the most tranquil citizen that Tucson was a first strike city. Not too far from the Catalina foothills is the Seguarro National Park, acres of protected Seguarro cacti, some hundreds and hundreds of years old. Just on the other side of the park is Old Tucson, where many of my favorite westerns were filmed. Even today its not unusual to walk down a dusty 1800's western town street and see a movie company at work doing exteriors consisting of old-type shootouts and bank robberies. Back to the present we find Artisoft, makers of LANtastic located in the "high-tech" area of Tucson. The aerospace industry flourishes here in Tucson, where a pilot can fly more days a year than most anywhere else. Tucson is the "twilight zone" between the old and the new. And with this the last Connect! publication of the old year, what might we expect in the new year of 1995? Amazing and wonderful things. In the ever-changing world of digital electronics, its a safe bet that all bets are off. 1995 will no doubt bring dozens of new electronic play-things that we have lived without for so long, but won't be able to survive without come this time next year. BBS systems not on the Internet will soon be nothing more than a phone number and an unused one at that. With the on-line masses turning to a way on to the "network of networks," the stand-alone BBS system will slowly disappear; the image of an Arizona ghost town comes to one's mind. Whatever happens, and when it happens, CONNECT! MAGAZINE will be there to report it. I hope you'll be with us in the new year. ß --David Wachenschwanz, Editor (david.wachenschwanz@atomiccafe.com) ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Checking the calendar... But only a few left lasting imprints in my tiny mind. The greatest imprint came in my first review of on-line stuff available to Houston modem-maniacs. The Chess Echo of Fidonet provided a big surprise. This echo, offered by several bulletin boards in the Houston area, had a guy in his early 20s who portrayed himself as a little Canadian girl-chess prodigy named Rita Goudreau. Establishing that image of himself, the imposter, really named Alec Goudreau, proceeded to post inane and incompetently written messages instructing others on how to become a great high school girl-chess champion, as he. Then, this Great Fidonet Imposter won moderatorship of the Chess Echo. Only when a chess expert noted that at least one major European event won by this imposter didn't exist -- even as he/she laid waste to some of the greatest adult females in chess -- did the imposter agree to step down from moderatorship. It's hard enough to take any Fidonet moderator's threats seriously, let alone get corrected and threatened by a little girl who's really a loser barely beyond his teens. I entitled that story 'Come Back Rita', after a message from one of the Fidonet users who'd had a good E-mail chess match going with the imposter. The message-writer said he didn't care WHO Rita really was, as long as he/she/it kept playing! The reaction shot across the echo's international channels: "All I can say is: wow! And the poseur ended up as moderator of the Chess Echo!?" reacted accomplished chess player and echo-user David Myers. Alec Goudreau also created the character of Theresa for chess fans who preferred a more mature and worldly female champion. Here's how it turned out: ============================================================================ "The truth is I'm just a nobody who got fascinated and caught up in a personality I invented on-line and was pretty happy," says Alec Goudreau, the one we knew as Canadian high school chess prodigy Rita Goudreau, in a public confession on Fidonet's International Chess Echo. I must admit that I loved looking at Rita's games where she beat the dickens out of her school-tournament foes. She also performed solidly against E-Mail opponents in the echo. By February of this year, Alec had let Rita quickly advance to his own age of 22 -- a tip something had gone wrong. Rita's Canadian scholastic rating of 1400 rocketed up with her age, hitting 2011 on Canada's official list by one Goudreau report, which later proved bogus. Also, some people should have noticed that Alec and Theresa misspelled the same words in the same way. Rita published an article in the echo titled, _Advice for Beginners and Amatures_. (A passage from this article appears at the end of this article.) And in Alec's confession and elsewhere, he repeatedly misspelled _amateur_ the same way. Theresa played chess, but didn't talk much. Another Canadian echo user, Vojin Vujosevic, took much heat from other users when he began questioning the accomplishments. He even got a reprimand from Co-Moderator Bill Spinks, who later apologized after the confession. "I resent your attack on a lady who has done much for the International Chess Echo," Spinks fired at Vujosevic. "Further messages of this type will result in your expulsion from this conference." Vujosevic noted that Rita's sister, Theresa, had related news of checkmates of Rita's against top women opponents, Svetlana Matveeva of Russia, no. 16 woman player worldwide, and Irina Chelushkina of Ukraine, no. 42 globally. Rita took a draw from Alisa Maric, who had stood as the third top woman only two years ago. Rita's wins came at the Schiffers Invitational Memorial Tournament in Hamburg, Germany, which proved missing from official lists of German chess events, supposedly named for an historic Russian player. "Why would Germans think so highly of Emmanuel Stepanovich Schiffers, although he was a great player, to have a tournament in his honor?" Vujosevic asked Goudreau. "And the prizes were distributed in Swiss Francs, not Deutsche Marks. Did I miss something?" Vujosevic immediately tracked down a noted Canadian player, Dianne Mongeau of Quebec, who had fallen shamefully to Rita in the cyber-world of Fidonet's International Chess Echo. But in the physical world Mongeau had never heard of Rita. Vujosevic also surveyed the Montreal chess scene where Rita accessed the echo. He couldn't find the chess club spoken of in the echo. The Goudreau's _Uncle Joe_ was said to operate this club "frequented by wealthy Grand Masters and their bodyguards." Although Vujosevic had no proof, he went so far as to question Rita's physical regimen she used to keep in top fighting-chess shape. The routine included 314 Marine push-ups, which Vujosevic doubts many Marines could accomplish. Once Alec confessed, Vujosevic expressed the same frustration and regret most Chess Echo users did. But he also showed compassion toward Fidonet's Great Imposter and immediately left him a message of forgiveness. "I stupidly expected people to thank me," Vujosevic writes. "But it seems so many are gullible and believe authority and headlines without questioning anything. On the other hand when I read Alec Goudreau's confession, I wished I never gotten involved." ========================================================================== Speaking of gullibility along U.S. Vice President Al Gore's wonderful Information Superhighway, Alec got a parting shot inserted in his confession. After apologizing, Goudreau stuck in a stinger about how people shouldn't believe everything they read in these message bases. ========================================================================== "I think it was really idiotic of some people to have believed I was (rated) 2011, when in fact all it would take was the latest edition of En Passent (Canadian chess) magazine to confirm I was not speaking the truth. "All the games you saw were mostly those between Private Parties or others. I never really faced those players mentioned. I know now a certain part of me will forever carry much regret and pain for what I have done. But I have cleansed myself in telling the truth and coming forth and being confronted right here and now." ========================================================================== Then comes, my old friend Shawn Quinn, a young Sysop. He ended up going to the Harris County Boot Camp for Youthful Offenders in 1994 on a series of reportedly counterfeit messages that ended threatening someone in a public message area. He'd previously gotten arrested and drawn probation over hiring a hit man-imposter for $5 and some game cartridges -- who later revealed himself as a District Attorney's investigator. While Quinn attended boot camp, the media reported several escapes. I wondered, but didn't find out until afterward that Shawn wasn't an escapee. The initial escapes happened his first night there, as he reported: ============================================================================= "I was in In-dock. We had a count of 71. That morning, the Guide says, 'Prepare for a quick count!' We reply, 'Aye, Guide!' At the end of the count, we come up three missing. Then, they put a freeze on the facility. Nobody goes anywhere until we figure out what happened. I can imagine what havoc it would have caused if it would have been on someone's graduation day from the camp." ============================================================================= All that's over now. Harris County Boot Camp For Youthful Offenders revealed itself as solid as most game plans of the Houston Oilers this season. For those not following sports, that means the Boot Camp went out of business. Translate: It ain't there no more. But Shawn's there with his bulletin board, The Knight Stuff, at 692-8527. Shawn's working. Modeming. Got all his old friends and more calling in. I entitled his story 'He's Still Standing'. And I think so! I covered a few boards in the area carrying a set of patriotic echoes called 'Paul Revere Net'. On one area of the net, they discussed the siege by federal lawmen on the Idaho home of the Weavers, where sharpshooters shot and killed two members of the family, including the unarmed wife, Vicky, as she held her infant near a window. The Paul Revere Net messages can reach a level of passion not seen in many areas, as you can gather from this bit of discussion naming Vicky's sharpshooter, a federal agent they call Horiuchi: ====================================================================== I don't know about you, but this pisses me off beyond words. I hope that Horiuchi ends up in the crosshairs of a patriot's scope one day and gets what's coming to him. If he ever gets in my crosshairs I'm going to send him one and name *MY* .308 168-grain Sierra HPBT match bullet Vicky in HER honor. ====================================================================== Late in the year, I made a visit to an astounding organization going through the painful throes of reorganization and hiking membership fees. I speak of Houston Area League of Personal Computer Users, HAL-PC. Way back in the early- to mid-1980s, when I had HAL-PC membership and wrote for the organization's monthly magazine, the organization's 10,000-plus members had a high nerd-percentage, with representatives of the most egregious varieties. Half of them had pocket protectors and the others wore dirty, pocketless t-shirts. Today's HAL-PC membership features many men and women in really sharp business attire. Among the few t-shirted individuals, I found no filthy clothing. They do seem to bathe regularly. I did spot one genuine nerd and here's my report: ============================================================================ Back in the olden days, nearly all nerd-talk centered on high-capacity disks and disk-drives. Wandering among the membership, I found a crowd of men and women encircling someone or something. As I neared the mass, I could see a clenched fist repeatedly shoot just above the heads of the on-lookers. Edging carefully, still nearer the group, I found the source of their fascination -- a diminutive man with a troll-like visage, who told about a recent computer-related conquest as if he had gone on safari and bagged a mad bull-elephant. "I BOUGHT that motherboard! It wasn't even on the MARKET yet! I PAID 800 DOLLARS for it! I INSTALLED it!" He held a sheaf of papers in his left hand, freeing his right hand to thrust ceiling-ward in triumph with each stressed word. And with each word emphasized, he came closer to leaping above the heads of the speechless but obviously appreciative group of men and women. With each thrust of his sweaty right arm, his face contorted with seeming dementia and even more troll-like features. The wrinkles on his loose dress shirt seemed to move, looking like little asps racing around in search of a sheltering hole. ============================================================================ The last of my greatest surprises came when National Videotex Network, NVN -- Houston's bid in the race of nationwide computer on-line services like Compuserve -- went belly-up in the ugliest fashion. One of NVN's Forum Managers (Sysop) even called me -- I used to work with NVN -- asking what the heck happened. Here's the message he got when he tried to log on June 17 to perform his work: +================================================================+ | | | Sorry, due to unforeseen difficulties. The Network will be | | unavailable for the next few weeks. | | | | Management | | | +================================================================+ This message went up exactly one week later: ===================================================================== 404 320.25 DISCONNECTED OUT OF ORDER 00 ORIGINALLY CALLED DTE OUT OF ORDER ===================================================================== Then, NVN went completely MIA to interested parties and the media, unless the service had them on the creditors books -- which means they get regular reports from the U.S. Bankruptcy court. NVN, a service of U.S. Videotel, went bankrupt because nerds ran the service. Real computer nerds care only about the hardware they have around to play with. They have no regard for people and don't give a crap what anyone thinks about it. That's why NVN could offer a beautifully full slate of Internet services without caring enough to tell anyone about it effectively. Once, Boardwatch magazine published a letter to the editor where the writer praised NVN. The editor's reply to the letter, 'What's an NVN?' In that same issue of Boardwatch appeared a large advertisement for NVN! However, the editor could be forgiven his ignorance, because the ugly advertisement looked just like something a stupid little computer nerd would put together with his nerdy desktop publishing software. Nerds think if they place an ad then you're obligated to read it and follow their commands. So nerd ads don't get read. They get the nerds bankruptcy. And did. Unless Boardwatch collected immediately on those advertisements, I'll bet they know "what's an NVN" now! And now, here's that passage promised early from Alec/Rita/Theresa Goudreau's series of instructional articles on Fidonet's International Chess Echo entitled, 'Advice for Beginners and Amatures': ======================================================================= Consider the Consequences of ill thought Planning and Play in this game between Myself and a Beginner who desn't even deserve the title of amature for his play. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- White David Kornell 12 Years Old Black Rita Goudreau 22 Years Old Simulatenous Exhitibtion, Montreal 1. d4 e6 2. e4 c5 3. nf3 cxd4 So far so go white has brought out his Knight and his central pawns are devloped but from here on end he goes down hard. 4. H4? Bb4+ 5. C3 dxc3 6. Ng5? cxb2 Not paying attention inattentive and now he is in check and will lose. This is typical Play of people who never or if ever touch a chess board before and have only the extreme basic ideas of play. 7. Ke2? bxa1=Q 8. a4? Qxb1 9. Be3 Qa2+ 10. Kd3 Nc6 11. F3 Ne5+ 12. Kd4 Qb2 Checkmate. This type of Play is ugly and inexcusable on the part of white. But we must ask why it happened in the first place he failed to play the correct move 4. Nxd4 which would have been correct. The move 4. H4 is completly wrong. Next when black played 5. Dxc3 white had to respond to this threat so 6. Ng5 was also wrong, because the next move I toast his rook and put him in discovered check [ Thats a piece moving out of the way and either forking a piece and attacking it while another piece places the opposing king in Check. Next you want to keep as many pieces towards the center because thats where they are the strongest. If you put a Knight by itself in the center of a chess board you can see it is very powerful because it can attack in 6 directions. If it was on h1 it can only attack 2 squares g3 and f2 so you can see what I mean. The most important things to remember are that chess consists of three elements time, force and space. The faster you develop castle and bring your pieces out and mobile your army the better your chances of not getting viciously slaughtered like David was. But the opening is only a devloping stage the middle game is the actual battle and how you plan and mobolize your army will have a direct affect on how the course of the contest will shape, the endgame is when the middle game battle is over, many pieces are exchanged off and the remaining forces fight it out. Until next time, I'm dialing down the road. Chuck Wharton will review a different Houston BBS system here each month. Los Alamos researcher Roger Johnston and his team are finding ways to improve most tamper-proof seals that protect government equipment and commercial products. According to Johnston, it doesn't take lasers and nuclear accelerators to fool a tamper-proof seal. All it takes is a good artist and machinist. While not intended to prevent tampering, tamper devices simply indicate to the user that the system has been altered. Los Alamos researchers have broken and resealed tamper indicators on everything from nuclear components to aspirin bottles and found that fooling the experts is fairly easy. The scientists are using their expertise to help the government build better tamper devices. Their expertise is also available to commercial industry on request. YOU DESERVE A BRAKE TODAY ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß By Jim Danneskiold, LANL PIO Los Alamos researchers, working with wheel bearing company NTN Technical Center, are developing an optical wheel rotation sensor for future automatic braking systems when automobiles will use fiber optic communication systems. ABS sensors release individual wheel brakes in microsecond bursts to prevent the driver from losing control and going into a skid. Fiber optics offer several advantages over conventional wiring: they cannot be damaged by salt or water and do not oxidize. Another advantage to the optic sensor is that it suffers no signal loss when the vehicle slows down. Since the sensor works all the way to zero speed, the same sensor can be used as the speedometer. BAKING SODA FRESHENS MORE THAN YOUR FRIDGE! ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß By Jim Danneskiold, LANL PIO Los Alamos researcher Don York has found that an ordinary baking soda solution dripped through a column of uranium-contaminated dirt leaches out the uranium, returning the soil close to its original state. The baking soda binds with uranium as it travels through the soil. York then separates the uranium and baking soda with an ion exchanger so that both the uranium and the leaching solution can be re-used. York has removed up to 92 percent of uranium from a soil sample and says that rate will improve as the process solution is refined. By adding different reagents, York hopes to leach metals like mercury, chromium, beryllium and lead to clean contaminated soil. York says the system can be applied on a larger scale like the heap/leach piles the mining industry now uses. ASH GLASS BECOMES TRASH ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß By Kathy Higgins, LANL PIO Los Alamos scientists are developing a process that converts ash generated by a controlled-air incinerator to glass that can be easily disposed of in a landfill. Researchers blend the ash with chemical additives to reduce the melting temperature. The mixture is fed into a stainless steel canister and heated to 1,100 degrees Celsius in a clam shell-like furnace. An agitator stirs the product during heating to mix and improve heat transfer. The glass cools and the canister can be sealed and placed in a standard 55-gallon drum for conventional disposal. LOS ALAMOS INVITES MECHANICAL ATHLETES TO MAY 1995 ROBOT GAMES ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß By Jim Danneskiold, LANL PIO LOS ALAMOS, N.M., Nov. 2, 1994--Micro mice, sumo wrestling roaches and other mechanical athletes are training for the Fourth International BEAM Robotics Competition, which will be sponsored in May for the first time by Los Alamos National Laboratory. Robotics engineer Mark Tilden of Los Alamos' Physics Division, who began the games in Canada in 1991, expects more than 200 competitors of all ages for the May 4-7, 1995, event at Glorieta Conference Center east of Santa Fe. Los Alamos' Nonproliferation and International Security Division is coordinating the event with help from other Lab divisions. "This competition is unique because anyone can compete and win olympic gold," Tilden said. "We've had l0-year-olds who built robots out of scrap materials wipe out university engineering professors with $50,000 robots, so we're actively encouraging school kids and science classes to get involved." Tiny mechanical gladiators of similar abilities -- made from scratch and survival oriented -- will vie for medals in a series of racing, leaping and battling events. Generally, robots will be judged on sophistication of behavior, novelty of design, efficiency of power use and quality of hardware, Tilden said. The acronym BEAM in the event's title stands for Biology, Electronics, Aesthetics and Mechanics, the four areas on which competitors must focus when they create their athletes. "Through the BEAM Robotics games, we hope to promote public interest in the science of practical robotics, instead of simulations of artificial life or million-dollar computers stuck onto wheels," Tilden said. "And cheating is encouraged. We give everybody a chance to adjust their robots for the conditions of the event." -more- The dozen-plus events include the "solaroller," or self-starting dragster race, the high jump, robot sumos pushing each other out of the ring and micro-mouse, in which metal micromice race in a maze for metal cheese. Tilden calls the games an open forum for novice and advanced robot builders to show off their designs. Any robot can enter, so long as it doesn't originate exclusively in a kit or store. Entries range from simple mechanical devices fashioned with a soldering iron from discarded cassette players or calculators to the sophisticated machines built by professional robotics engineers. "The idea of improving robotic science through competition and fun is not new, but the BEAM principles make it possible for anyone interested to create their own real artificial-life creatures," Tilden said. Registration fee is $40, or $20 for students 22 and under. Scholarships are available. Those interested in entering robots in the games, or just building their own mechanical creatures, should send $15 for a copy of the BEAM Robotics Competition rules to: BEAM Robotics Competition Paul Argo Mail Stop D466 Los Alamos National Laboratory Los Alamos, NM 87545 (505) 667-2701 E-mail address: robot@lanl.gov The Laboratory also is developing a World Wide Web site for electronic access to information about the rules and the games. LOS ALAMOS, LASER FARE TO DEVELOP WASTE-FREE LASER COATING SYSTEM ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß LOS ALAMOS, N.M., Nov. 2, 1994 -- Companies that coat products to improve corrosion resistance, reduce wear or speed production of injection molds soon may have a new, waste-free laser coating system with the potential to cut production times from a month to a day. Researchers at Los Alamos National Laboratory and Laser Fare Inc. in Smithfield, R I., have teamed up through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement to develop the environmentally friendly coating techniques. Through the collaboration, Laser Fare and Los Alamos will design a laser-driven processing system that deposits protective coatings on a wide variety of products without generating the harmful wastes produced in electroplating and other commonly used techniques. The laser system could bc used in rapid production of injection molds, reduction of wear on machine tools and the addition of corrosion- resistant coatings to many products. Carle Conway, chief executive officer of Laser Fare's parent company, INFINITE MACHINES CO. of Incline Village, Nev., said the goal of the agreement is development of a practical, laser driven physical vapor deposition system. "Our interest in thin and thick film work has been driven by requests from our customers," Conway added. "We have been awarded contracts in this area and we see it as a growing market opportunity for the Infinite family of technology companies." Marty Piltch, who heads Los Alamos' Advanced Optical Systems Development Group, said the new laser-coating process could reduce the time it takes to make an injection mold prototype from a month to a day. "We feel these rapid prototyping capabilities could be valuable to many industries, including automakers, toy manufacturers and makers of computer hardware," Piltch said. Los Alamos and Laser Fare will investigate the use of lasers across the spectrum, from the ultraviolet to the infrared, for a process that combines melting and ablation to apply coatings as thick as half an inch, he added. Clifford Brockmyre, chief executive officer of Laser Fare, said, "We enjoy a strong working relationship with Los Alamos. These people have a rich heritage in developing advanced laser concepts. Laser Fare is highly skilled at bringing these concepts to the marketplace. This collaboration in developing new coatings technology is a classic example of technology transfer at work." Many everyday products have surface coatings to prolong their useful lives or improve their appearance, Brockmyre pointed out. "We want to use laser-based techniques to develop a cost-effective, easy-to-operate system for environmentally sound coating processes. The need is there; the market is there," Brockmyre said. "For many years, we have successfully supplied laser-based solutions to manufacturing problems and we plan to continue this work well into the future." The value of the cost-shared, one-year CRADA is $112,000. Funding comes from the Department of Energy's Small Business Initiative, which was developed at Los Alamos. Laser Fare is a full-service machine shop and recognized leader in laser materials processing. The 14 year old company offers cutting, welding, drilling and marking services to industry using solid-state and gas lasers. Laser Fare's services range from research and development to prototype development to high-volume production. Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary research organization that applies science and technology to problems of national security ranging from defense to energy research. It is operated by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy. FOR WHOM THE BRIDGE TOLLS ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß By Kathy DeLucas, LANL PIO A New Mexico research team will determine the condition of South Korean bridges using a Los Alamos technology. The research effort starts in the wake of a Seoul highway bridge collapse in October that killed 32 people. This past summer, Los Alamos researchers successfully demonstrated microwave devices similar to the small, commercial, microwave-activated automatic doors in grocery stores to inspect the integrity of a bridge. Researchers aimed the microwaves on the underside of a bridge slated for destruction. The microwaves reflected back to a parabolic dish and were computer analyzed to determine a baseline vibrational mode pattern. After a welder's torch cut a large crack in the obsolete bridge, scientists measured the vibrations again and found significant differences in the vibration pattern, much like a cracked bell that rings differently than one that is not cracked. The technology is inexpensive, portable and inspections can be conducted quickly. Los Alamos researchers say the system can be used to find defects in many things from ball bearings to bridges with more reliability than visual inspection. The state research group will assist a South Korean engineering firm conducting the bridge inspections. NEURAL NETS CATCH BIG THREE ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß By Kathy DeLucas, LANL PIO Los Alamos researchers recently received $2.4 million from the Department of Energy to help the Big Three automakers meet future stringent emission levels for automobiles. General Motors has contributed a Caprice Classic, $50,000 worth of data-gathering electronics and a $150,000 dynamometer, a special device that measures engine torque. Researchers will use operating data from the 5.7-liter engine to investigate a neural network -- a series of sensors that provide feedback to a computer -- and a computer model that identifies optimum engine fueling requirements during acceleration and deceleration or as fuel properties, such as oxygenation, change. Ultimately, the cooperative research may lead to adaptive engine controls that will be tested on engines made by all three automakers. THE GOOD DON'T DIE YOUNG ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß By John Gustafson, LANL PIO The most extensive study to date of causes of death among workers at Los Alamos found that the group overall is very healthy compared to the general population. Overall, there were only 63 percent of the expected number of deaths from all causes and 64 percent of the expected deaths from all cancers. The study compared mortality data for 15,727 Los Alamos male workers to similar data for the general population. The study also separated the worker population according to those monitored for plutonium body burden, but found no significantly elevated causes of death for the plutonium-exposed workers compared to their monitored, but unexposed, coworkers. HEAVY METALS WASH OUT ßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßßß By Kathy DeLucas, LANL PIO More than 10,000 metal finishing shops in the United States must treat their waste water to remove metals. The treatment can be expensive and may require additional hazardous solvents. Using simple water-soluble polymers, Los Alamos scientists have found a way to remove metals cheaply and quickly from liquid waste streams. Researchers found that a common off-the-shelf polymer dissolved in the water will selectively bind to specific metal ions. The polymer- bound metals can then be separated using commercial filters. The metal can be recycled while the discharged water meets all regulatory requirements. Researchers recently demonstrated the technology for Boeing Aerospace in Seattle. advertisement ÚÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ¿ ³ ATTENTION TBBS/TDBS SYSOPS! ³ ³ George Peace's MASTER FILE MANAGER ³ ³ offers total control over your file ³ ³ downloads/uploads! ³ ³ MFM makes the handling of CD-ROMs on ³ ³ your BBS especially easy.
