Funderburk, a Republican, was picked for North Carolina's 2nd District, to fill the seat of a retiring Democrat. Funderburk, 50, holds a Ph.D. and taught history at several North Carolina colleges before being appointed by President Reagan as U.S. ambassador to Romania in 1986. His expertise is in East European and Russian studies. He was a Fullbright Scholar. K4TPJ described himself to Roll Call, a newspaper serving Capitol Hill, as an ''avid ham radio operator.'' He holds a General class license. Funderburk and his wife Betty Jo live in Buies Creek, North Carolina. NNNN /EX
