Silent key -- VK2BAW Obituary Wilf Murrel, VK2BAW, was a well-known Hillston resident. He was born in June 1914, spent his childhood and education years at Henty. From the time he left school Wilf joined his brothers in a venture to operate the Culcairn Power Station, and in 1939 he bought his own first power station at Walla Walla. During the course of the war he married Elsie Haines in March 1940 and their daughter Lynette was born in Walgett in 1947. With the breakout of Second World War, Wilf joined the RAAF in 1941, and after his training in Australia was transferred to Canada where he completed his Advanced Flight Training, passing with high distinction, such that he became a flight instructor and a fine pilot whose contribution during the war was a considerable effort in the training of fighter and bomber pilots. On discharge after the war he left with the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He returned to power station operation and bought the plant at Collarenebri where he spent the next few years before moving to Hillston where he bought the Hillston Power House. Wilf never lost his love for flying and the older people in that district will well remember his flying exploits with small aircraft and landing groceries and medical supplies and mail during the '56 floods, many properties being completely isolated at that stage. He flew many emergency missions taking to Hillston and other medical centres, or flying doctors out to attend accidents on the various properties in the district. He kept up with his flying expertise by instructing at Griffith and Sydney flying clubs. Other parts of Wilf's extensive career was as a Shire Councillor where being a man with progressive ideas he was able to give very expert advice. He also competed in the Redex trials together with Eric Roberson in air races and Alan Taylor in the road trials. Time and again Hillston came up as the home base of the winners. The headlines in the '50s and '60s newspapers refer to - the bushies from the out- back who done it again and won the event. Wilf was responsible for many inventions, dozens literally, his water purifier was a typical example of the talent that he had. Wilf was also a good piano player, provided many of his friends with enjoyable evenings around his grand piano. This was valued greatly because this was in the days before TV and this was the only form of entertainment available to country people. He was also known for his ability as a rifle and pistol shot, won many events during his younger years and was always ready with advice and repairs for the younger ones. He was in the 1937 King's Shoot championships in Sydney which was quite an achievement. He would have been outright winner if it were not for a sudden illness which affected him on the very last day of the event. He was also an expert photographer and a ham radio enthusiast with friends all over the world who regularly contacted him and provided the international information he needed to stimulate his mind. Wilfred Murrel was also a sawmiller here in Hillston and a garage proprietor in the premises presently occupied by the Hillston Rescue Squad and later in his life, a farmer on his property Wilga Farm. He spent a few years in Sydney during the 70s when he engaged in contract management of buildings. Wilf passed away at his home on Wilga Farm after a short illness in the early hours of Friday 22nd July. He was in the company of his wife, his daughter, his granddaughter and his nurse at the time. His remains have been interred at Henty. Vale Wilf Anthony Murrell VK2BAW VK2 DIV. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE This is Michael Corbin VK2PFQ. Well we have a wish list again this week....Perhaps this time I have to sell the concept a little harder ....Well, here goes....As I requested last week we are in need of someone to help Peter Kloppenberg VK2CPK, our current "freeby" secretary, on a casual basis of course, to get the office back up to date. Filing is our concern. I will explain our dilemma once again and in terms, I hope, which will tug at the very strings of your hearts. Hopefully, galvanising someone out there into action. The question is, really.....What do you expect for your membership fees? Well lets examine what you get now for your money. Apart from the obvious AR Magazine, you get free access to the QSL Bureau....You have at your disposal a library which has the latest magazines, as well as many books on various topics. If you can't make it to the office, we will research the matter and answers are forwarded to you for a small fee. Technical Books are sold in our Parramatta Office at a reduced cost. If you want to come to the office to research your own subject or just to have a chat and a cup of Coffee, then you can. We even "give you" a biscuit. We have a radio station which can be operated by arrangement; a meeting room which is available to affiliated clubs, again by arrangement. A Transmission Station at Dural which provides you with this weekly broadcast, repeater facilities on various frequencies, and Beacons as a service to the world wide amateur fraternity. These facilities are open for inspection most weekends and you are always welcome to drop in on any Sunday. The question that you should now consider is... what do other Divisions give their members for the same sort of money and soon, in some States, NOT ours, for more money?....Answer..... almost none of the above! Now that brings us to the real crux of our problem.... What do YOU expect from the Office. If it's information, well, someone has to be there to give it to you. This costs both time and money. The money side of it is pretty straight forward.... the cost is in the wages of the staff which either provide you with the answer you require or takes a message and passes it on to the relevant person, who in turn gives you the information. The time side is the other part of the equation. If questions are to be answered and/ or information sourced and supplied, this takes time. When we call the office, most of us like to have a bit of a chat. I don't discourage this, as it is part of the hobby, indeed it's a prerequisite. But..... When you chat, something must suffer and unfortunately that is where the problem lies. So, perhaps the way you might be able to help, if your not much good at filing, is to just sit there and answer the telephone. You know, we could probably look into diverting the telephone to your 'phone number and that way you need not even leave the comfort of your own home. You had better tell the XYL. While Peter Kloppenberg continues to do a sterling UNPAID job in the office, he cannot do two things at once. It is to this end that we are requesting some help from you out there in Ham Radio land. Aub Topp and Max Bowie do a great job, but we need more like them. Aub Topp is supposed to come in only on Tuesday, but it's not uncommon to find him there more often than that. Max is our "Boy Friday". Max does things that the office staff should do, but don't have the time to do. Max spends from 5 to 6 hours in the office....that's a days work you and I as members don't have to pay for. The same goes for Aub Topp. His efforts bring the total up to 2 days we don't have to pay for. The question is, can you give us a similar amount of time or.....can you give us any time.....any amount would be appreciated. If this is not your bag, what about a job as assistant librarian. Why? Aub needs assistance....quite apart from the fact that he has been doing the job...for years. What we should probably do is ask someone else to take over his job. Please Aub don't ask to be replaced yet. At present all information is recorded by hand. What we need is to have this information on a database. If we had such a thing, then information could be provided to members, at the push of a button....Well who wants the jobs? Applications for either position need not be in writing. If you think you might fit the bill, give me a ring at home on 626 9288 ....anytime during daylight hours. I'm usually at some sort of a meeting most nights. Indeed, why not call me after the Broadcast. This week I attended the Veterans meeting/come Christmas Party as Santa Claus, complete with an appropriate Red hat with the obligatory white pom pom on the top. (For those of you who have never met me, I have hair and a beard of the necessary colour to fill the bill adequately.) It was the first time I have been able to go to one of these meetings and I must say I enjoyed myself immensely. Any of you veterans out there, who have never attended one of these gatherings, is missing out I can tell you. If you think that the word veterans only applies to those who have been in the hobby for years, you're wrong. Veteran applies to those of us who have reached mature years. Hi! Hi!. The invitation is there for the next meeting and, yes, everyone is welcome. Oh, the next meeting is in February, the third Thursday....mark it on the calendar now... the third Thursday of February, that's February, 19th 1995. This week the Institute was advised by the Executrix of the Estate of the Late Mr. Dennis Maxwell-Gill that the Institute had been left a quantity of books and equipment. This gentleman was not a Ham but had managed to accumulate an enormous amount of test gear the like of which I have never seen before. There is a least two truck loads of this gear. To this end don't, whatever you do, miss the Trash & Treasure sale next weekend at Amateur radio House Wigram St Parramatta....and as for the books....Dennis has bequeathed to the Institute what can only be described as a very comprehensive library of reference material. These will become available just as soon as they have been catalogued. It is indeed difficult to express our gratitude considering the magnitude of this bequest. .....and now to the "Brickbats Department"...Those of you who listened last week will recall that the Broadcast was one of our longest for some time.....One hour and ten minutes to be precise. A listener even commented on the call backs that.... and I quote "Nobody could complain about the Broadcast as... there was something in it for everyone"...unquote. Well sorry Old Man, you were wrong...somebody WAS unhappy...It seems that I left something out of the Broadcast which it appears had to be announced for TWO weeks....It had it's first mention last week, then....Well, you guessed it....I left it out of the Script last week, and what's more I left it out ON PURPOSE...Yeah! That would be right. I'm like that...Did you know??!!?? Did I get a call after the morning Broadcast?...Of course not.... Did I get a call after the evening Broadcast?...again, of course not!!...The person doing the call backs got a complaint. I intervened and suggested that the individual concerned place any complaints he might have about me in writing, to the Broadcast Officer......Did that happen....NO!...The person concerned got someone whose style is unmistakable to write.... You guessed it again....A Packet message......and all this occurred even though I assured the person concerned, by telephone, that the mistake was genuine. I'll give YOU the facts and let YOU be the judge. Last weekend was one full of Problems. The fax line was cut by the construction team down the road from my premises for the SECOND week in a row. The last time, which was the previous weekend, it was cut on Saturday morning, fortunately it was fixed within four hours. This time, the mishap occurred on Thursday...The service was restored sometime on Saturday. Then, to make matters worse, Richard Murnane's computer did a Backflip and kept sending his eight pages of message to me....pages one and two only!..... FIVE copies of each on each attempt, over and over again!!!! A quarter of a roll of fax paper later, I ran out of fax paper. ....and you guessed it again....There was not a replacement roll on the premises....and the local paper shop had closed. I contacted Richard and asked him to fax the copy to Pat VK2JPA; rang Pat and asked her to sit on the message 'till I got another roll of fax paper; got down on my knees and prayed that not too many messages would come in overnight and overload the memory of my fax machine. In the morning, just as soon as the XYL got back from the "tabernacle" (I'd left in the meantime for the same place). She shot down to the shop; got another roll; wacked it the machine and hoped for the best......and this clown thinks I had the time to edit his confounded item out of the Broadcast!!!! HUMPH!!! Well Sir, perhaps next time I just might enforce the requirements for items submitted for Broadcast....TO THE LETTER. No, come to think of it I'm not the type. BUT if I was.... I would not have put it on in the first place. The rules are...and I was TAUGHT them by YOU Sir are... In by THURSDAY, you insisted on this, TYPED... That's TYPED, Double Spaced and.... should you require the item to be repeated for more than one week...Then, an appropriate amount of copies to be submitted. NOT...In late...Hand written... only ONE copy...Not clearly marked that more than one Broadcast was required by "highlite" pen or any other method. Come on mate. Relax... After all...It's supposed to be a hobby. I believe that by and large the Broadcast team does a pretty good job.....Don't you listeners???? I'd be interested to know if you did not agree....See you next........Hey, wait a minute. Something else seems to have disappeared or.....has someone pinched it? No, it was not left on the safe; it was not suitable for ATV, repeaters, or other associated things. But, it has disappeared. What is it? It was/is a TH3. It was borrowed (?).....OR...Am I correct? It was pinched! Who's got it?......Where will this ever end??? See you next week Intruder watchers needed This is a reminder that we need vigilance to protect our bands from the encroachment of stations who have bo right to put signals in our exclusively allotted frequencies. Would you like to help watch for, or monitor, intruders on our bands? Intruder watch reports have been successful in getting intruders removed. For example, reports from volunteer observers of the Radio Society of Great Britain's Intruder Watch were instr- umental in having an interfering harmonic from Radio Rusii, a shortwave broadcaster located near Moscow, removed from the 20m band last year. (See WIA News in Amateur Radio, March 1994 issue). The Federal Intruder Watch Coordinator, Gordon Loveday VK4KAL, is seeking more volunteers to help monitor the HF bands. In particular, Divisional Intruder Watch Coordinators are needed in VK2 and VK3. But how do you recognise an intruder? Well, Gordon has a very instructive tape on the subject, packed with real-life examples. If you're interested in helping out, write to Gordon and include a blank C60 audio cassette. Write to: A.G. (ii) Items should be clearly typed, double spaced -- 9 pin dot matrix printed materials are not suitable for fax transmission. (iii) Items to be broadcast on more than one weekend should ideally be submitted separately for each week OR sufficient copies should be sent to cover the weeks required for each broadcast. (iv) Items should not contain any blasphemous or slanderous materials. Any Club which wishes to disagree at any time with the policies of the Council of the Division, should do so in writing, via the appropriate channels. Items such as the above, submitted under the guise of Club News will not be read. Perhaps an appropriate place for such "News" would be after the relay of the Official Broadcast on the Club Repeater. Late as well as regular items, can be submitted direct to the Broadcast Officer at ANY hour day or night on FAX (02) 626 6066. WICEN News Here is a brief report on the Co-ordinators Conference held at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst, on October 29-30th. Nineteen members attended the conference, coming from Central Coast, Hunter, Central West, Sydney South, Sydney North, and Blue Mountains. An Extraordinary General Meeting, as notified, was con- vened in order to receive and consider the Financial Statement, which was duly accepted. Ray Gill VK2BRF, a prominent WICEN member, was commended for his election to President of the VRA at their recent Annual Conference. Uniforms were discussed, as were the green overalls, and their instant recognition by the various authorities were noted, as was the possible confusion between green overalls and green flags by train drivers. A training grant from the NSW Government received attention, and various proposals to use this money were considered. WICEN's responsibilities under the Charities Act and others were discussed, and all Regions are cautioned to "be careful out there" -- the various laws are a veritable minefield! There was to be a talk on the GRN Government Radio Network, but unfortunately the representative could not attend, so one of the GRN users spoke in his place, in particular on the limitations of the network; WICEN personnel need not worry that they may be superseded by GRN. The Central Coast bushfires in January were discussed, with many "behind the scenes" observations, and David Thorncraft VK2UDT is to be commended for his efforts. This was followed by a talk on the relationship be- tween the WICEN Management Committee and the Regions, and the duties of the various positions.WICEN's role in the State Disaster Plan -- DISPLAN -- was discussed, and the importance of contacting your District or Local Emergency Management Officer and getting on to the Communications Sub-Committee was noted. A General Forum was held after dinner at the local Chinese restaurant, with many views put back and forth. The next day, Ray Gill spoke on the role played by the VRA, WICEN, and CREST, and their relationship to each other; it was emphasised that WICEN and CREST should work closer together within the VRA. This was followed by a dissertation by Barry VK2AAB on WICEN's own DISPLAN, with emphasis on preparedness, response, logistics, and co-operation with other services. Reports were then received from various Regions, followed by general discussion, and a highly-successful conference was closed. Thanks go to Peter VK2AGB for supplying the material from which this report was summarised. Events this month include the Hunter WICEN meeting tomorrow and the closing date for the Newsletter on 30th November. For next month, WICEN has been requested to assist with the NSW Water Ski Association "Lion Island Classic", on Sunday 11th December 1994. Along with the usual 2m requirements (which regretfully were not mentioned previously), long distance communications are required from Croppy Point to Laughtondale, and this will probably involve 80m. At least six personnel are required, from 0900 to 1430, and those interested are invited to to contact David Ramsay VK2KLX. -- Dave VK2KFU, WICEN (NSW) Inc. Publicity Officer Stolen equipment Rudi Breznik VK2AOT was the victim of a major equipment robbery that took place after the Gold Coast convention last weekend (last Sunday night, November 5th). Rudi, who owns the Sydney company, Emtronics, had equipment worth more than $25,000 taken when his car was stolen from outside a restaurant after the day's business at the convention. The vehicle was later recovered more than 150 km from the scene, but the equipment it had contained was gone. The missing equipment included antenna tuners, antennas and various pieces of amateur equipment. Because it happened away from his business, none of the stolen equipment was insured. This loss deals a severe loss to Rudi, whose company, like many others, has suffered during the recession. If you are offered ANY equipment (and all of this was new), at a price that seems too good to be true, please alert your local police, preferably without arousing the seller's suspicions. Most of the stolen goods were branded "Emtron", the trading name of Emtronics, so they shouldn't be too hard to identify. All the equipment has been listed in a detailed manifest which has been handed to police. The complete list of stolen property will be printed in the next issue of ARA (and, presumably, Amateur Radio magazine). If you have any information or suspicions about the location of some or all of the property, please contact Rudi direct on (02) 211 0988 or by fax (02) 281 1508.
