And now the solar factual data: The period from the 9th to the 15th of January saw solar activity at very low levels and the geomagnetic field at mostly quiet levels. The sunspot indices increased from zero on the 9th to 23 on the 12th before declining to 18 by the 15th. The mean for the period was 12. Solar flux levels increased every day from 74 units on the 9th to 81 units by the 15th, with the average for the period being 76 units. No flares were reported. The electron fluence declined every day to end the period at moderate levels. The x-ray flux levels increased from A1.1 units on the 9th, peaked at A4.1 units on the 12th, then declined to A2.9 units by the 15th. The average for the period was A2.2 units. The 90 day solar flux average on the 15th was 83 units and is declining. Geomagnetic activity was mostly quiet with the 15th down to an Ap index of only 3 units, the Boulder K indices recorded six zeros out of the 8 observations for that day. The 11th was the only day that was unsettled with an Ap index of 13 units. The average for the period was Ap 6 units. The state has been 'nil, nothing to report'. The aa indices as reported by the British Geological Survey from the 3rd to the 9th of January started the period at very unsettled levels with the 3rd at 52.6 nanoTeslas. Levels then declined every day and by the 8th were down to quiet levels at 12.9 nanoTeslas. The average for the period was 28.5 nanoTeslas, about K3. The December monthly geomagnetic Ap index was 9 units, with the smoothed level for June 1994 being 17.8 units. Bartell's rotation number 2205 started on the 12th of January. I'll repeat the figures: Spots - 12; Flux - 76; Ap index - 6; X-ray flux - A2.2; December magnetic Ap - 9. Now the ionospheric data for Central France. The F2 daytime critical frequencies at Poitiers, as reported by Meudon for the period from the 6th to the 12th of January, averaged 6.7MHz. The best day was the 6th at 7.2MHz. The darkness hour lows averaged 2.4MHz with the 7th down to 1.9MHz. Spread F was recorded for 9 hours during the early hours of the 9th. The daytime highs are taking place between 10.00 and 14.00 hours with the darkness hour lows between 04.00 and 07.00 hours. On the 9th of January the GOES 8 satellite, situated in a synchronous orbit at 90 degrees West, started to supply the electron fluence data. I'll repeat the figures. Highs - 6.7MHz; lows - 2.4MHz. And lastly the solar forecast. This week the quieter side of the sun is expected to be looking our way. Solar activity should be 'very low' to 'low' with the solar flux levels in to the 70s. Geomagnetic levels are expected to be quiet to unsettled throughout the period. Ionospheric MUFs for the south are expected to be about 19MHz and 16MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows are expected to be about 8MHz. And that's the end of the solar information.
