Good morning. It's Sunday the 4th of December and here is the GB2RS news broadcast, prepared by the RSGB and intended for all radio amateurs and short-wave listeners. The Radiocommunications Agency has announced that, in certain cases, they will be publishing details of those whose amateur licences have been revoked,. Until now, the RA has regarded licence details as confidential between the itself and the licensee. This has made it appear that the Agency has been too lenient with offenders. The decision to publish will be based on the consideration that it is important to make other licensees aware of the revocation of a licence, and the ensuing ban on radio use for the person concerned. This outweighs the normal rule that information about licensees should be regarded as private. The RSGB QSL Sub-Manager for the G3TAA - TZZ callsign series, Mr J Taylor, G0RFN, has moved house. His new address is: 121 Garesfield Gardens, Burnopfield, Newcastle Upon Tyne NE16 6LQ. Now some items of HF DX news from the weekly RSGB DX News Sheet which is edited by Brendan McCartney, G4DYO. From Canada, the special callsign VA1S will be aired through the month of December from Cape Breton Island. Operation will be carried out by members of the Marconi Amateur Wireless Club of Sydney, Nova Scotia, on 160 to 10 metres, CW and SSB. From Turks and Caicos, JA1FUI will be active as VP5/JA1FUI from VP5JM's QTH from now until Wednesday the 7th of December. Operation will be on all bands, SSB and CW, but especially on 20, 30 and 40 metres. From Barbados, KU9C and K2PF will sign 8P9GD and 8P9GE respectively from next Thursday the 8th, until Monday the 12th of December. Now the Rally News, and we know of no events for today Sunday the 4th of December. Note that the Leeds and District Amateur Radio Society Christmas Rally, scheduled for today has being cancelled. The only rally we know of for next Sunday the 11th of December is the Verulam Amateur Radio Club Rally which is to be held at the Watford Leisure Centre, Horseshoe Lane, Garston, Watford. Doors open at 10am. The event features a bring and buy stall, and a grand raffle. Refreshments will be available and talk-in will be on 2 metres, channel S22. Details from Walter, G3PMF on 01923 262180. Now for the HF contest news: The ARRL 10 metre Contest takes place next weekend from 0001 UTC on Saturday the 10th, until 2359 UTC on Sunday the 11th of December. See December's edition of Radio Communication, page 19 for further details. Next some VHF contest news: The RSGB 144MHz AFS, Fixed and SWL Contest takes place today Sunday the 4th from 0900 to 1700 UTC. For further details see November RadCom page 78 The last event in the RSGB 1.3GHz and 2.3GHz Cumulative Contest takes place tomorrow, Monday the 5th of December, from 2030 to 2300 UTC. For details of both of these cumulative contests, see July RadCom page 82. And now the solar factual data: Unfortunately no data has been received from Meudon since the 18th of October, and to add to the woe both NOAA satellites, 6 and 7, have also had computer trouble. We have been assured that by the 30th of November all should be back to normal. From the data we have for the period 21st to the 27th November, there was a steady increase in sunspot counts, with some B class flare activity mainly towards the end of the period. As forecast last week, geomagnetic levels were very quiet up to the 25th, but then increased to 'substorm' levels. The sunspot indices increased throughout the period from 11 on the 21st, up to 42 by the 26th, with the mean being 27. Solar flux levels averaged 79 units for the period, but increased from 76 units on the 22nd to peak at 83 units by the 26th. The x-ray flux also increased with several C and B class flares, the biggest being a B8.7/SF on the 26th. Flaring continued on the 27th. Surprisingly the electron fluence levels declined from high to normal by the 26th. The 90 day solar flux averaged 83 units on the 27th. The x-ray flux levels increased from a low of A1.9 units up to A6.4 units by the 26th, with the period averaging at A3.0 units. Geomagnetic activity was very quiet. It was down to an Ap of only 3 units on the 23rd and 25th, but the increase in flare and flux activity, together with the passage of a coronal hole, produced a considerable increase in the geomagnetic levels during the morning of the 26th, when a sudden storm commencement began. This pushed the index up to 7 for 6 hours. The Ap index on the 26th reached 39 units, and on the 27th 25 units, This was rather unfortunate for those taking part in the CQ Worldwide DX CW contest. The period averaged an Ap of 13 units The state had been 'nil, nothing to report' up to the 25 then 'mag alert'. The aa indices, as reported by the British Geological Survey, for the period 8th to the 14th of November were mainly quiet and averaged 17.9 nanoTeslas, about K2. The 9th was the only disturbed day with a level of 29.9 nanoTeslas. I'll repeat the figures: Spots - 27, Flux -79, Ap index -13, x-ray flux - A3.0. Due to the breakdown in information, we have no ionospheric data. However the Geminids meteor shower is due to start on the 7th of December and continue through to the 16th. It is expected to peak just before dawn on the 14th. The radiant lies near Castor in Gemini, low down in the north eastern sky. The Ulysses space craft which is probing the sun's magnetic fields, completed its pass of the sun's southern polar region on the 5th of November. First reports state that the spacecraft did not find any magnetic poles, just a uniform field. And lastly the solar forecast: This week the quiet side of the sun should be looking our way; solar flux levels are expected to decline to the mid 70s. Little flare activity is expected. Geomagnetic levels are expected to be mostly quiet to just unsettled. Based on past history, ionospheric MUFs, during daylight are expected to be about 25MHz hours in the south and 21MHz in the north. Darkness hours are expected to reach about 10MHz on north/south paths, with east/west paths being about 7MHz. And that's the end of the solar information. Finally in the main news, SSL has informed the Society that as of last Wednesday morning, the latest callsigns allocated were in the G 0 Victor Mike and G 7 Tango Whiskey series, and Novice calls in the 2 0 Alpha Juliet and 2 1 Delta Oscar series. -- NEWS FOR THE SOUTH EAST Meetings for Monday the 5th of December: Basingstoke Amateur Radio Club has its Christmas Social.
