Microsoft Windows.  You will need about 5 Megabytes of free disk space on
your hard drive.

SoftQuad HoTMetaL has been made available by SoftQuad Inc., and is not
a product of NCSA.  This is an unsupported product of SoftQuad Inc. -- please
see the copyright file (copyright.txt) for more information.

INSTALLATION In Ten Easy Steps
==============================

PLEASE follow all the steps carefully.


[1] The Fine Print

The COPYRIGHT file (copyright.txt) contains details about terms of use and
redistributions.

[2] The Difficult Decision

You will need to choose somewhere to install SoftQuad HoTMetaL.
A directory called "hotmetal" will be created, but you can put that
directory anywhere you like.

You will need approximately 5 Megabytes of disk space.
We'll assume that you chose C:\HOTMETAL, but you can put it anywhere.


[3] Unpacking the distribution (if you haven't already done so)

Change directory to the place you chose in step [2], for example, in
an MS/DOS window (or in MS/DOS), and unpack the archive:
>>	C:> cd \
>>	C:> L:\hotmetal.exe -d

This example creates a HOTMETAL directory inside C:\, so you end up with
C:\HOTMETAL; the hotmetal.exe self-extracting distribution was on a
networked L: drive, but you could have put it anywhere you had space.


[4] Set up a Program Item

In Windows, create a new Program Item, with
	   Name: SoftQuad HoTMetaL
	Command: C:\HOTMETAL\BIN\SQHM.EXE -sqdir C:\hotmetal
      Directory: C:\HOTMETAL

[5] Print The Manual (optional)

If you want to print out the manual, it's in hotmetal/doc/hotmetal.ps, and
you can send it to any PostScript printer (it uses LaserWriter Plus fonts,
such as Palatino, however).
The manual will use about 60 pages.

[6] Read The Manual (optional) 

You can do this later if you're impatient.


[7] Create an Association in File Manager (optional)

In File Manager, choose the "Associate..." menu item from the "File" menu.
Associate files having the extension HTM with C:\HOTMETAL\SQHM.EXE."

This will let you launch HoTMetaL by double-clicking on an HTML file.
Of course, you may prefer to have a browser such as NCSA Mosaic launched
instead in this case.


[8] Run The Program

Double-click on the icon you created back in Step 4...


[9] Read The Manual

(if you didn't do it before)


[10] Order The Pro Version
