NCSA Mosaic for Microsoft Windows User's Guide

HyperText Markup Language (HTML)

The hypertext documents viewed with NCSA Mosaic are prepared in HTML (HyperText Markup Language) format. HTML is a subset of the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML). Among the many formatting features, HTML allows NCSA Mosaic to display bold and italic text, inline images, and forms that can be filled out by the user.

HTML documents are simply text files with special markup tags, or commands, in angle brackets (< and >). For example, <b>bold</b> produces the output bold; <i>italic</i> produces italic. Hyperlinks are created with a tag that includes an embedded URL.

HTML is discussed in ``Creating Simple HTML Documents.'' This appendix also provides a pointer to the more complete Beginner's Guide to HTML.
