NCSA Mosaic for Microsoft Windows User's Guide

Installing Win32s

All versions of NCSA Mosaic for Microsoft Windows since Version 2.0alpha3 are 32-bit applications. If you are not running Microsoft Windows NT (i.e., you are running either Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups), you must install the Win32s software before you can use these newer versions of NCSA Mosaic for Microsoft Windows.

Win32s allows you to run 32-bit Windows applications which do not use Windows NT-specific features under Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups. Win32s was developed by Microsoft and is freely distributed to licensed users of Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups. If you already use other 32-bit Windows applications, you should already have this software installed in your /windows/system/win32s directory. If Mosaic is your first 32-bit application then you will need to download the win32s.zip file from the NCSA FTP server. This file is in the same directory as the compressed NCSA Mosaic for Microsoft Windows executable and you download it in the same manner.

        ftp ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu
At the login prompt, enter anonymous
At the password prompt, enter your email address (e.g., jdoe@business.com)
        cd PC/Mosaic
ls To list the available files and directories
bin To change to binary mode for the file transfer
        get win32s.zip
quit To quit the FTP application and return to your machine

Move the file to the /windows/system/win32s directory and uncompress it:

        pkunzip win32s.zip

The file readme.txt, which will be created when you uncompress win32s.zip, contains further installation instructions.

Since Microsoft regularly updates the Win32s software, it is a good idea to check periodically to make sure you are using the latest version. See the NCSA Mosaic for Microsoft Windows Home Page for current Win32s release information.
