****************************************************************** * * * METZ Phones * * README FILE * * * * This file contains important last minute information * * about METZ Phones. You may want to print this file to make * * it easier to read. * * * ****************************************************************** ****************************************************************** How to update to Phones 5.50 from Phones 5.x ****************************************************************** IMPORTANT!!!!!!!! This version of Phones will modify your database, making them incompatible with previous versions. If you are using METZ Phones on a network, all users will need to be updated if you will be sharing any phone books. Your existing settings will be saved if you are upgrading. ****************************************************************** Trouble Shooting ****************************************************************** Install hangs system: Try changing the "install=y" setting in the INSTALL.INI [share] section to "install=n". You will then need to manually install SHARE if it is not already installed. METZ Phones requires SHARE: The METZ Phones Install program will check to see if share is installed on your system. If it isn't, you will be asked if you would like to have it installed for you. SHARE.EXE is included with DOS. You can add share to your AUTOEXEC.BAT so that share will be automatically loaded when you start your system. The line you add will be similar to: C:\DOS\SHARE.EXE Make sure that this line appears before any line that may run Windows. If you have Windows for Workgroups installed, share is not required. If you are using a Novell Netware Network, you do not need to install share if the database and network path are located on the network drive. ****************************************************************** Dialing Phone Numbers ****************************************************************** The METZ Phones modem settings allow you to set the dialing and long distance prefixes and current area code. These settings affect how a phone number is dialed. Should you have some phone numbers that need to be dialed as is, regardless of the dialing prefix, long distance code, area code and dialing suffix values, place a "=" character at the beginning of the number. The equal sign will be ignored and the number will be dialed as is. ****************************************************************** Ini File Settings ****************************************************************** METZPHO.INI The METZPHO.INI file contains the various settings for METZ Phones. Following are the undocumented INI values which you may find useful. If the setting does not exist, simply add it. Shown are examples with their default values. You will need to restart Phones for any changes to take effect. [METZ Phones] ListCacheSize=200 ListExtendedSelect=TRUE ListIndent=TRUE ListActivate=FALSE ReportFirstLast=FALSE LoadHigh=Yes LoadHigh=Yes RecordChangeMsg=Yes [Modem Settings] BuildDCB=Yes OnTop=Yes WinFax=Yes ListCacheSize - The List window displays various database records. By storing (or caching) the information it needs once a record has been accessed, performance improves considerably. If you have a large database, you can increase this value to improve the List window performance. METZ Phones will use some additional memory as a result, roughly 30-60 bytes per record. Setting this value to zero will disable record caching. ListExtendedSelect - Setting this value to FALSE will change the way the mouse can be used to select records in the List window. Records can then be selected individually without holding down the shift or ctrl keys. ListIndent - The List window displays records based on the currently selected sort order. If the main sort field is blank, another field may be displayed in the first column, indented slightly. For example, when you sort by Company, records without a company value will display the name indented slightly. If you want to disable the indentation, set this value to FALSE, and restart Phones. ListActivate - When you open a database from Phones, the Record View window is activated. If you want the List window to be activated instead, then set this value to TRUE. ReportFirstLast - When printing reports, names are printed as "lastname, first middle". If you would rather have it print "first middle last", then set this value to TRUE. LoadHigh - The Paradox Engine uses lower DOS memory by default. If this causes problems with other applications, try setting LoadHigh=Yes to cause the Paradox Engine to use upper memory. BuildDCB - If Phones has trouble opening your communications port, try setting this value to No. OnTop - Set OnTop=No if you do not want the dialing dialog to appear in front of all Windows applications. The default is to stay in front. WinFax - Set WinFax=No to disable the Delrina WinFax dialing compatibility. RecordChangeMsg - Set this value to No to disable the message which indicates a record has been changed by another user. METZPHO.ENV The METZPHO.ENV file contains the envelope settings for METZ Phones. Following are the undocumented INI values which you may find useful. If the setting does not exist, simply add it. Shown are examples with their default values. You will need to restart Phones for any changes to take effect. [METZ Phones] SavePrinter=TRUE SavePrinter - By default, the Envelope printer settings will be saved. Set this value to FALSE if you do not want the printer settings to be saved. METZPHO.LBL The METZPHO.LBL file contains the label settings for METZ Phones. Following are the undocumented INI values which you may find useful. If the setting does not exist, simply add it. Shown are examples with their default values. You will need to restart Phones for any changes to take effect. [METZ Phones] SavePrinter=TRUE SavePrinter - By default, the Label printer settings will be saved. Set this value to FALSE if you do not want the printer settings to be saved. METZ.INI The METZ.INI file contains the various settings for METZ Software products. Following are the undocumented INI values which affect METZ Phones. If you don't have a METZ.INI file in your Windows directory, simply create the file from Notepad. [METZ] DateApp=control.exe DateApp - This option determines what application is launched when you double click on the Date or Time display at the bottom of the application window. The default application is the control panel (CONTROL.EXE). If you want the control panel to open up into the Date/Time dialog, use "DateApp=control.exe DATE/TIME". WIN.INI The only use of the WIN.INI file by Phones is actually by the Borland Paradox Engine. The default settings for METZ Phones are as follows: [Paradox Engine] MaxTables=50 RecBufs=64 MaxLocks=32 MaxFiles=10 SwapSize=128 NetNamePath=C:\ UserName=Your Name Goes Here MaxTables - Sets how many tables can be open at once. The maximum value is 64. If you want to run more than three copies of Phones at once, you may need to increase this value from the default. RecBufs - Sets how many record transfer buffers are available at one time. The maximum value is 512. MaxLocks - Sets the maximum number of record locks per table. The maximum value is 128. Setting this option higher decreases performance on the network. Phones only places one lock per table, per user. MaxFiles - Sets the maximum number of file handles for all applications (Paradox) in all windows. The maximum is 255. This value should be left at 10. SwapSize - determines the size (in kilobytes) of the swap buffer. The swap buffer functions as a cache. A larger swap buffer reduces disk access for tables, but uses up memory that Windows might otherwise allocate to other purposes. The maximum is 256. Running more than three copies of Phones at once may require a higher value. NetNamePath - location of the Paradox Network control file. Even without a network, you must specify a valid path. UserName - sets your user name. If you edit a record, Phones will tell other users that you already have the record locked, using this name. You can increase these values in the WIN.INI file. If you need to reduce one of these values from what is listed as the default above, add the same section to the METZPHO.INI file and adjust the value in both the METZPHO and WIN ini files. MaxFiles can only be overridden in the METZPHO.INI. NetNamePath and UserName cannot be overridden in the METZPHO.INI. ****************************************************************** * For more information about installing or using METZ Phones * * contact: * * * * METZ Software Technical Support * * P.O.
