The following are some Frequently-Asked-Questions related to using SLIPpper for DOS. If you can not find an answer to a question in either this FAQ, the SLIPPPER.DOC file, or the README file, then send email to circular@delphi.com and we will try to assist. Q. SLIPpper is not connecting when it dials out The possible causes of not connecting are quite numerous and various, but most of the time, it is caused by incorrect settings. Double check your Modem settings to be sure that the proper COM port is set, and if it uses a non-standard IRQ and base-address, be sure those are set as well. And of course, make sure you entered a valid phone number to call. The Baud Rate can often be a culprit. If it connects but does not "handshake", then try a lower baud rate and see if that works. Also check your Preferences and note the Available Memory. If it is less than 400K, you may not have enough memory to create the "sockets" SLIPpper needs. You can usually increase available memory by editing your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files to remove any TSR's or drivers you don't need, reduce the number of FILES= or BUFFERS= if it is more than you really need, etc. Q. SLIPpper connects but my username/password is not being accepted. The Internet is case-sensitve in many instances. If your username or password is supposed to be in all lower-case, then be sure you entered that way in your Account Settings. Q. I can login ok, but my mail is not being sent or retrieved. Be sure that you entered the correct addresses in your SLIP settings. If you've confirmed that those are correct, then perhaps you need to increase the "idle" time in your Preferences so that SLIPpper will wait longer for your host to respond. Q. My mail is being sent, but it has the wrong return address on it. If you change the username being used to login, be sure to also change the "Email Address" in your SLIP Settings. That is what is always used as your return address. Q. When I try to retrieve Usenet messages, it hangs and never gets anything. Check the "Date/Time" settings on the Usenet menu. If the date is older than a week or two, many hosts will take a long time trying to load up all the messages. Change the Date to something more recent and see if that help. Also make sure that you have not mis-typed a newsgroup name. Newsgroups must always be in lower-case, and can have no spaces in them. Q. SLIPpper will not load on my PC The video default is assumed to be VGA. If you are not using a VGA moniter, then unzip the SCREENS.ZIP file that came with the program, find the appropriate *.DEV file for your moniter, and copy it over the SCREEN.DEV file. The SCREEN.DEV file is what SLIPpper uses when the program is loaded. Q. SLIPpper will not print messages. Unzip the PRINTER.ZIP file to load all the printer drivers. Q. I need to clean up my directory. Which files can I delete? First, use the PURGE options on the EMAIL and the BULK ERASE option on the USENET menu. You can also erase the HISTORY.* files in your USENET subdirectory, and the *.SNT files in your USENET/OUT subdirectory. If you have unzipped the SCREEN.ZIP and/or PRINTER.ZIP file, then you can erase any *.DEV or *.BBX files you do not need.
