DOCUMENT:Q103947 02-SEP-1993 [W_NT] TITLE :Installing New Drivers from Media Not Used During Setup PRODUCT :Windows NT PROD/VER:3.10 OPER/SYS:WINDOWS KEYWORDS: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: - Microsoft Windows NT operating system, version 3.1 - Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server, version 3.1 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Windows NT Setup copies setup information files for the media you are currently using. If you install Windows NT from floppy disks, setup information files containing directions and disk numbers for floppy disks are copied to your hard disk drive. If you later need to use files from a CD-ROM disc, Windows NT Setup prompts you for floppy disks. You can change the source media for a given device driver by copying the proper setup information file to your Windows NT SYSTEM32 subdirectory. In this manner, you can install new device drivers from any media you choose. The names and locations of the setup information files you need for changing printer, SCSI drive, tape drive, pointing device, and video drivers are listed at the end of this article. The following example describes how to install a new pointing device driver. Installing a New Pointing Device Driver from Floppy Disks --------------------------------------------------------- To install a new pointing device or mouse from floppy disks after having installed Windows NT Advanced Server from a compact disc, use the following procedure: NOTE: To install a different type of device, see the section below, Setup Information File Names and Locations, and substitute the appropriate file name and disk for POINTER.IN_ and Disk 2 respectively. 1. Insert Disk 2 from the Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server 3.1 disk set. 2. Start Command Prompt from the Main group in Program Manager. 3. Go to the SYSTEM32 subdirectory. 4. Substitute the appropriate floppy disk drive letter for and type the following command line: expand :\pointer.in_ pointer.inf 5. Start Setup to install the new device driver as you would usually do. You are now prompted for the appropriate floppy disk instead of the compact disc. Setup Information File Names and Locations ------------------------------------------ Setup information files are listed by device type and include disk locations. NOTE: If you want to install a device driver from a compact disc after having installed Windows NT from floppy disks, copy the appropriate setup information file from the compact disc. Windows NT Windows NT Advanced Server Device Type File Name Disk Label Disk Label -------------------------------------------------------------- Video Adapter VIDEO.IN_ Disk 8 Disk 7 SCSI or Tape SCSI.IN_ Disk 4 Disk 5 Printer PRINTER.INF* Disk 6 Disk 6 PRNSETUP.IN_ Disk 9 Disk 9 Pointing Device POINTER.IN_ Disk 2 Disk 2 (Mouse) *The PRINTER.INF file is already in expanded format and only needs to be copied to the \SYSTEM32 directory.
