------------------------------ Describe for Windows v2.0 ------------------------------ If you use 4DOS as your command shell and use the 4DOS DESCRIBE command to describe your files then Describe for Windows is for you. Describe provides a screen editing of file descriptions, plus file manipulation (copy, delete, move). Describe is released as shareware, registration details are provided in the application itself. No special installation is required, just run the app. The comment edit window is subclassed so that the up, down, page up, and page down keys allow you to scroll through the listbox. To try this click in the description edit box and then hit down arrow. A description character count is provided to the right of the description to allow you to track the length of your descriptions. Since 4DOS only displays the first 40 characters of a description, you may want to limit your descriptions to 40. You will be prompted for permission to save the description file in all cases unless you explicitly ask for a save using the File/Save menu command. Please report any bugs or suggestions for improvement to the author. ------------------------------ Caveats ------------------------------ 80 character max description. If you have descriptions longer that this, don't allow Describe to save in the directory or your long descriptions will be truncated. Directories with greater than 500 file may not be handled correctly. I have made no attempt (yet) to make Describe bullet proof accessing the hidden 4DOS description file (descript.ion). I don't know what will happen if more that one instance of Describe is running and competing for the same description file. Furthermore, a DOS window running a description editor may also cause unknown problems if competing with Describe. ------------------------------ Revision History for Describe. ------------------------------ v2.0 Interface redesigned. Directory/drive controls implemented like Common Dialogs. File copy/move/delete feature implemented. Descriptions are maintained. File run added. Can double click on a file to execute. Also can double click on data file to launch associated application. Updated description file changes for 4DOS v4.02. v1.1 Initial Public release. Fixed minor file saving bugs. Ensured that exiting Windows will query user for description saves. v1.0 Initial beta release. ------------------------------ Credits. ------------------------------ Thanks to my beta testers for hammering the application to death. Thanks to Pat Beirne for the original interface layout and edit subclassing idea. And thanks to my wife for putting up with me. ------------------------------ The legal section... ------------------------------ Describe for Windows Copyright © 1990-1993 by David Crossmier.
