INTRODUCTION
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here are all the records of HODDY which my Father has extracted from St.
Catherine's House. I hope that they may be of use to other researchers.
The three main files are in  comma de-limited format. This format should
hopefully make it  easy to import the information  into a wide selection
of database programs, spreadsheets  and word-processors. All the records
in all of the files are indexed on YEAR+QUARTER. If anyone is interested
in  the  information  but  finds  this  format  confusing, then they are
welcome to contact me at the addresses given at the end of this document
and I will  do my best to send  them these files in the  format of their
choice.
The files contain  a little information additional to  that found in the
indexes  at St.  Catherine's House.  This additional  information is the
result of  some of our  own researches. It  would have been  possible to
include a little more information but  we could not have guaranteed it's
accuracy. Where the information has  been included, we have ensured that
it is supported  in other sources, e.g. census,  parish registers, wills
etc..  Nearly  all  of  the  extra  information  relates  to individuals
registered  in the  County of  Suffolk,  the  main focus  of our  Family
History interests.
Not  included in  the St.  Catherines House  indexes, is  mention of the
county in which  each registration district lies. We  have added this to
our  records  so  that  the  records  may  be searched more effectively.
However,  it was  no mean  task to  find out  exactly where  some of the
registration districts (RDs)  were, or indeed still are  and a little of
this may  be inaccurate! Unfortunately,  my Father didn't  recognise the
significance of the reference number  associated with each record in the
indexes and so didn't record them. They are significant because they can
be used to  locate unknown RDs in relation to  those districts where the
location is known. Thanks goes to  Rosemary Lockie for pointing out this
important piece  of information and  for allowing me  to include amongst
these  files a  copy of  her useful  file CHAPMAN,  which is  a list  of
counties and their associated Chapman tri-graph.
In the files, I have used the Chapman tri-graph to designate each county.
If you know all  the Chapman codes then you may be  surprised to see the
inclusion  of  LON  for  London  instead  of  LDN.  This  because I have
classified  part of  some of  the RDs  as belonging  to London (Greater)
rather than splitting  London up into Middlesex, Surrey  etc. I've found
this to be less confusing.
THE FILES
~~~~~~~~~

Field names are not found in the *.CSV files but are included here for
reference. Also, I've included the length of the fields as they
are, more-or-less, in my original .dbf files. This is so that you may
set the field lengths in your own applications and avoid truncating the
my fields when they are imported. You may find though that you can
safely reduce the size of some of these fields.

BIRTH.CSV - Contains records of births of HODDY in England and Wales
from 1838 - 1954 and is constructed as follows:

      field         length     description
      ~~~~~         ~~~~~~     ~~~~~~~~~~~
      DATE             4       Year in which registration was made.
      QUARTER          1       Quarter in which registration was made.
      FIRST_NAME      30       Registered first-name.
      MOTHER          30       Mother's maiden name (see note below).
      DISTRICT        20       Registration District.
      COUNTY           3       County in which the RD lies.
Note -  During 1911, the mother's  maiden name began to  be added to the
indexes.  Where  we  have  additional  information  we have included the
mother's maiden  name in those records  for entries prior to  this date.
Sometimes we  have only the  mother's first name,  and when this  is the
case, the name  is enclosed in brackets. When  the mother was unmarried,
we have included the mothers full-name.
MARRIAGE.CSV  - Contains  records of  marriages of  HODDY in England and
Wales from 1837 - 1940 and is constructed as follows:
      field         length     description
      ~~~~~         ~~~~~~     ~~~~~~~~~~~
      DATE 4 Year in which registration was made.

      QUARTER 1 Quarter in which registration was made.

      FIRST_NAME      30       Registered first-name.

      SPOUSE 12 Spouse's surname (see note below).

      DISTRICT        20       Registration District.

      COUNTY 3 County in which the RD lies.

Note - The spouse's surname began to be recorded in the indexes during
1911. Entries in that field for records prior to that year result from
our own researches.

DEATH.CSV - Contains records of deaths of HODDY in England and Wales
from 1837 - 1950 and is constructed as follows:

      field         length     description
      ~~~~~         ~~~~~~     ~~~~~~~~~~~
      DATE             4       Year in which registration was made.
      QUARTER          1       Quarter in which registration was made.
      FIRST_NAME      30       Registered first-name.
      AGE              3       Recorded age at death (see note below).
      DISTRICT        20       Registration District.
      COUNTY           3       County in which the RD lies.
Note -  Age at death  began to be  recorded in the  indexes during 1866.
Again, entries  in this field prior  to this time are  the result of our
own researches. It is prudent to be sceptical of the accuracy of the age
recorded  here. We  have some  evidence that  the relatives  (or whoever
registered  the  death)  of  many  of  these  individuals recorded, were
unaware of the correct age of the newly deceased!
MISC_HOD.TXT - contains a few entries  from the indexes where there is a
similar  sounding  surname.  Some  of  my  ancestors have used different
spellings of the surname though there are few in this file who are. This
file is in  plain ascii and contains birth, marriages  and deaths and is
indexed on YEAR+QUARTER.
FINALLY
~~~~~~~
I am always very pleased to contact other researchers who have an
interest in HODDY. Sadly, there have so far been very few. Perhaps these
files will be of use to researchers who are interested in the names of
the spouses who married HODDYs. I hope so, and please don't hesitate to
contact me at the addresses below if you think I may be of help. Please
feel free to copy these files and distribute them unchanged to any other
researchers who may be interested.

Many thanks to my father who must have spent many hours wading through
all the books at St. Catherines House. I'm glad I didn't have to do it!

Thanks too to Rosemary Lockie who first suggested I make these files
available on her BBS "Wishful Thinking" in Cheltenham, UK (2:253/188).
She's been a big help to me, starting me off with comms and fixing
things for me when I still run into difficulties.
