It is the problem people have with messages with no phish content. Personally, I am glad to see some of these as I am in college and do not have the time to browse the entire net looking for things which I am interested in. I like the Pulp Fiction threads, the information about other bands and everything else. I think that if you take a look at this newsgroup, you will find that more bandwidth is wasted on petty bitching about posts without PC than is wasted on those actual posts. All it takes is to move on to the next message and you don't have to deal with that particular post anymore. This is a group of people, diverse as it may be, who share common intrests. I thought that phish fans were open minded people. I have been proven wrong by a select few who feel that they own this newsgroup and try to control the discussions within. and as a side note- i have also noticed that the people who bitch usually have signatures which are longer than the post they are bitching about. Come on people think before you post and share in the groove, don't try to keep it for yourself. C'mon y'all and shut the fuck up! I'm getting really sick of seeing these posts. Deal with it by phone, letter, telegram, or some other way. You got involved in the trade, deal with the consequences. Do you have his number? Call him, dammit. So he's lagging...that's not a reason to publicly crucify the guy. I don't want to know about your lame trades. How many trades end up like this? I'd venture to say not that many considering how many work out fine. So you lose some tapes...big fucking deal, maybe you'll get them back, maybe you won't. It's kind of like commuting...sometimes the traffic's backed up real bad when you're in a hurry and sometimes it's just flowing when you've got all the time in the world. (It makes sense to me...) The encyclopedia sounds about right, but where did the 256 bits number come from? My calculation (using 16 bits as the resolution): 45 min * 60s/min * 44100 samples/sec * 16 bits/sampleinajar * 2 channels (stereo, remember) = 3810240000. That's in bits. Divide by 8 to get bytes, divide by (1024*1024) to get MBytes, and you get 454 megs for 45 minutes. Which makes sense, since the upper limit is 74 minutes, and CDs hold somewhere between 600 and 700 megs (I never remember that). 454 megs for 45 minutes is 10.09 megs/min. times 74 gives 746 megs. About right. The 74 minutes was chosen because of Beethoven's 5th. Some CD makers put more on (especially with bootleg CDs). Some of them go over 80 minutes. But then there are people who have trouble playing those on certain players, which is why it's not done regularly. Staying under 74 minutes is the safest. All this is, of course, "AFAIK". But my 454 megs sounds a lot more realistic than that 3.8 gigs. Maybe CDs really can hold 3.8 gigs and the CD-ROM and CD-R manufacturers are cheating us... -- ================ Herschel Gelman =========== hagst3+@pitt.edu ================= ------------------------------ From: Aaron C Means Subject: trades Reply-To: means@stolaf.edu Date: Wed, 15 Feb 1995 03:16:26 GMT hey all, dont mean to grovel but, if anyone has a crisp copy of 7.13.94 big birch, patterson,NY and would be willing to trade, i would most definitely appreciate it. i have many 94 shows, including: sugarbush, bomb factory, providence, and many others, so please drop me a line. aaron e-mail directly: means@stolaf.edu ------------------------------ From: JKasper@warren.med.Harvard.edu (Jacob Kasper) Subject: UCIAA tree-HELP ME Date: 14 Feb 1995 21:30:16 GMT i haven't been able to get in contact with my parent:( i have sent numerous messages to me parent, and to the administrator(sp). nothing has happened. could some one PLEASE help?? i need to get the tapes off to my children. thanks -jake -- úÿ (continued next message) -- END OF MESSAGE --
