Please note that some of the tips below apply only to e-mailable lists; if you keep a non-text list and send hardcopies out, disregard items 1, 2, and 3. Enjoy! 1. Assume that your reader's mail system can only fit 72 characters across (standard is 80, but with automated end-of-line wrap, you're likely to get two lines for each single line you intend if you have more than 75 characters). 2. Write your list in a fixed-width font like Courier (fixed-width means that each letter takes up the same width, regardless of whether it's an "l" or an "m"), so you can see what it'll look like. 3. Create spaces on a line by using the spacebar, not the Tab key. Some primitive mailers (like mine) interpret Tab characters as single-width non-printable characters, which means I get one little box, not eight spaces. 4. Provide as much info as possible within the 72 character limit. Here's an example: 05/07/93 _2 Bangor Auditorium, Bangor, ME SBD1dm 10 100 05/30/93 all Laguna Seca Daze, CA AUD0dm 9 90 07/24/93 12 Great Woods, Mansfield, MA AUD0dm 10 190 08/02/93 12 The Ritz, Ybor City, FL AUD1dm 9 180 08/07/93 12 Darien Lake, NY AUD0dm 10 200 08/08/93 12 Nautica Stage, Cleveland, OH AUD0dm 9 90+110 08/13/93 _2 Murat Theatre, Indianapolis, IN SBD1dm 10 100 08/14/93 12 World Thtr, Tinley Park, IL AUD2 10 180 [date] [sets] [venue] [gen] [rate] [time] 5. Include all your personal data somewhere on your list. This means: Name, e-mail address, snailmail address (include 4-digit ZIP extension for faster delivery - it really does work!), TELEPHONE NUMBERS, taping equipment used, blank tape preferences, and maybe what you're looking for (a rare show, a particular era from a particular band, etc). 6. Keep it updated by noting the date of the last revision on the list. Keep a mailing list of all the traders you've done business with in the past and mail your list after you've made a major update. That's all for now! It has been my >experience that people who don't listen very deeply to music can enjoy stuff >like Sample, Chalkdust, etc. They scratch their heads bemusedly during Reba, >Harry, YEM, etc. And they cringe in disgust when they hear Demand, SOAMelt, Hmmm... I take offense to this. First of all, I must admit that I am rather new to the Phish scene compared to most of you out there. I've never been to a show and I bought my first album just last summer. And I think 'Sample in a Jar' is a great song, and not only that, I think 'Hoist' is a great album! Yes, I know what you are thinking now - that I'm the typical sample-head newbie. Yet this stuff about fans like me not appreciating their stuff that is 'out there' is absurd. A little over a year ago, a buddy of mine lent me Junta. Until then I had not heard a single note of Phish. I was instantly blown away by songs such as YEM, David Bowie, Foam, Fluffhead and Fluff's Travels, and (my personal favorite) Esther. The musicianship and song structure amazed me. It was a while before I heard any more Phish, but next it was Lawnboy, and I was equally impressed, I was not 'scratching my head' or 'cringing in disgust', on the contrary, I thought *wow* when I heard SOAMelt, Reba, Antelope, and the rest. I recently bought Picture of Nectar, and needless to say, I liked it (understatement). (What's wrong with Chalkdust, anyway?) Was I disappointed that the band seemed to be moving away from the style they crafted on Junta? No, I was very impressed with the way they moved forward, delving into musical styles previously unexplored by the band. Now, I must admit that I am not too familiar with Rift at this point in time, and by saying this I am opening myself up to being called a clueless newbie. But I really enjoy Hoist, and I view it as a natural product of their evolution as a band. I'm sure they could have instead put out an album similar to Junta, complete with 15 minute odd-time jams and what not, and thus satisfy many of the fans, but what would be the point? They've already done that, and it's there for everyone to hear at the concerts. They're moving on to different things, just like they've done with every other album. I think people are thrown off by the fact that it is so different from their other albums, and maybe they want to throw their fans for a loop. But in time, I'm sure that many of those who put the album down today will realize it for the good music that it is. Julius, Sample, Wolfman's Brother, SOAMule, it's all great to me! Whoa, didn't mean to waste so much bandwidth, but I had to get it off my chest. - Ray ------------------------------ From: golgi999@aol.com (GOLGI999) Subject: newbies suck Date: 14 Feb 1995 19:43:58 -0500 Reply-To: golgi999@aol.com (GOLGI999) i have been listening ti phish and doing shows for about five years now, and i agree people are being a little hard on the new boys & girls on the scene.its a power trip insecure cooler than tho people will always have. i did dead tour for almost seven years and all my freinds did nothinb but bitch about the new comer wanna b's,but it was not for these people know onr would make any money on tour. a catch22 one might say.not to mention half of them go away in a year or anyway.and the ones who dont stick around for a stronger scene.they might be dumb but everyone starts out that way....good job sticking up for the kids.excuse the typeing it's 4:20 here........... golgi999 see you at the next stop.......... ------------------------------ From: bob908@aol.com (BOB908) Subject: Re: !!!!!PHISH TO HEADLINE LOLLAPALLOZA '95!!!!!!!!!!!
