Does anyone have any advice or comments about how well this works with the GUS. Is BIAB patch cache aware?? Will it even work? Are there any comments about BIAB in general?? Jason ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jan 1995 13:36 -0500 From: DANTONIO@PROCESS.COM (Momentary Language, Sexual Situations) Subject: Clock speeds and NMI procedures... Clark Brunt asked... > I've often wondered, with these clock doubled processors, does > CLK/4 mean 16MHz, or does it mean 8MHz? I always assumed the > latter. I've always assumed that the BIOS is controlling the clock speed of the mother- board which is "normal." The chip doubles the clock internally, but it shouldn't matter to the BIOS (or the GUS), since it's the ISA bus we're talking about. > Now there may be other reasons that justify your statement, but the NMI > issue shouldn't be your only justification. I belive many PCI > motherboards lack NMI, and I wouldn't call them lame just because they > lack the NMI procedure. According to Intel, the NMI procedure is part of the hardware spec. Boards that don't support it aren't really 100% PC compatible. As to why it's often left out, one can only assume lazy/cheap manufacturers. Since it was originally used for memory parity and memory is perfect nowadays :-), there is no need for NMI so why bother? The same goes for non-parity memory, it's just cheaper and hey, memory doesn't fail anyway, right? Enough sarcasm for now. The point is that no one would by a motherboard that didn't support DMA. Not supporting NMI is the same thing... DDA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jan 1995 15:38:04 -0600 From: ken@austin.ibm.com (Ken Goach IBM) Subject: GUS/Descent error message! Nabil Rehman seems to be getting the same error when running Police Quest Open Season as I get when I run Descent. The game crashes, sustaining the last note, and an error almost identical to this is displayed: >DOS/4GW Professional error (2001): >exception 0Dh (general protection fault) at 170:0016ED9E >TSF32: prev_tsf32 626C etc. So, any clues for either of us? We seem to have a related problem! BTW - I had posted in the 1-11 digest about my Descent problems. Everything runs and tests fine in the setup program (Digital samples play, music plays). But when I run DESCENT, it gets up to the Loading... part, then either it crashes, or (more often) my computer resets! I've tried various configs w/QEMM w/o QEMM, clean boot, etc, as well as different IRQs and DMAs (8 and 16 bit) and no go. If I do the -noloadpats command line option, it either runs with a " error HMI: Sound Driver not properly initialized", or crashes with a lot of DOS4GW type General protection fault errors. If I run -NoSound, it works fine, but I'd _really_ like to hear some music/sound. Another note is that on exiting, it always crashes with a "Memory Allocation Error", and I need to reboot. This is the shareware version 1.1, running on a 486/DX50, 16MBs of memory. Yes, I've tried the BUS clock rate setting thing as well. The joystick JUMPS when I move in any direction (up, down, left, right, diagonal, etc...). I've seen mention of the problem before, but don't ever remember seeing a solution. Is there one? I KNOW it's the GUS card because the game works fine if I use my old 8-bit Sound Blaster. I even tried disabling the joystick port on the GUS and using the port on my IDE card, but it still didn't work. Any help would be appreciated! My GUS is version 3.4 and I'm running on a 386-40 Mhz machine. Any comments? It's usually a surface-mount chip so it amounts to SERIOUS motherboard surgery to replace it. Far easier to simply use an 8-bit DMA channel if possible. The resistor fix isn't for the faint of heart, either... I'd want nearer CLK/6 to arrive at 8MHz > if you are supposed to count the doubled speed. > The clock multiplier CPU's are magic in that they input one frequency and use a phase-locked loop to generate a higher frequency. For a DX2/66, the external clock is 33 MHz and the 66 MHz only exists within the CPU. Therefore, running the bus at CLK/4 should put it at 8.25 MHz. Most boards should be able to take this, but who knows, maybe there's something else in your system that's causing problems. CLK/3 is about right for a DX2/50. I've heard people talk about running their bus at lower divisors than usual to try increasing performance, or increasing their CPU clock which bumps up both the CPU and bus speed. Hey, you wanna risk frying a $400 motherboard, be my guest. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jan 1995 22:39:18 -0800 From: sbrindle@netcom.com (Stephen Thomas Brindle) Subject: Re: GUS Daily Digest V18 #11 >Date: Thu, 12 Jan 95 15:25:00 +0100 >From: enzo.siragusa@galactica.it (ENZO SIRAGUSA) >Subject: ULTRINIT's switches >Message-ID: <8A1739D.0001013939.uuout@galactica.it> > >Hi there ! > >I have a little question for you GUSers. > >In the software preceding the 3.53 version, the ultrinit.exe >driver was put in my autoexec.bat without any switch.
