Using TENCODE is the easiest way to encode text files. To invoke, type: tencode filename, where filename is the name of the file to encode. For example to encode the file letter.txt, type: tencode letter.txt and an encoded file named ENCR.XXX will be created. ENCR.XXX will be in the form of groups of five alphabetical characters, the traditional form of encoded text. This file, ENCR.XXX, is suitable for printing out as hard copy, for faxing, or for viewing with a text file viewer. TDECODE.BAT is the batch file used to decode text files previously encrypted by TENCODE.BAT. The encrypted file will (must!) have the name ENCR.XXX. To decode the file, simply type: TDECODE and the decoded file DECR.TXT will be created. Note that digits and most punctuation will be rendered as their literal equivalent, such as five for 5 and exclamationpoint for !. Note that the decoded file will lack word spacing making it somewhat awkward to read. FENCODE and FDECODE (see below) overcome these difficulties, but at the price of the encrypted file not being suitable for hard-copy. TENCODE.BAT invokes the executables CVT.COM to convert digits and most punctuation in the target file to their literal equivalents. It invokes fcr.com, a code-key generator, to create a file of random numbers defining the alphabetical "shift" of each character in the file to be encoded. ii FENCODE and FDECODE FENCODE.BAT is the batch file used to encode both binary and text files in the *ONETIME* file security package. Using FENCODE is the easiest and most flexible way to encode files of all types, including .COM, .EXE, .GIF, and other binary files. To invoke, type: fencode filename, where filename is the name of the file to encode. For example to encode the file picture.gif, type: fencode picture.gif and an encoded file named ENCR.XXX will be created. ENCR.XXX will be in the form of binary characters, not suitable for printing out as hard copy, for faxing, or for viewing with a text file viewer, but totally usable for storing on magnetic media or for transmission by modem. FDECODE.BAT is the batch file used to decode binary or text files previously encrypted by FENCODE.BAT. The encrypted file will (must!) have the name ENCR.XXX. To decode the file, simply type: FDECODE and the decoded file DECR.TXT will be created. The decoded file DECR.TXT will be the exact image of the original file encoded with FENCODE. If it was originally an executable file, rename it to its original .EXE or .COM name and it will execute as before. GIF and WK1 and other special format binary files will retain their full original functionality when the DECR.TXT file is renamed to the original form. iii ZDEL ZDEL.EXE is an absolute "file-shredder". It deletes files in such a manner that no information can be recovered from them by any special purpose utilities or software tools. The file to be wiped out is first overwritten, character by character, by 0x01, then by 0xFF, then by the letter Z before being finally deleted. To invoke, type: zdel filename, where filename is the name of the file to be wiped out. More information on this utility is included in the file ZDEL.DOC. The code still has some room for improvement, both in ease of use and speed, and the documentation is somewhat scanty. To the best of my knowledge there are no major bugs, but in any case future versions of this package will show great improvement, IF... there is sufficient interest shown by you, the users, in this package. If used correctly, the "onetime" system is theoretically unbreakable, even by the supercomputers used by domestic and foreign intelligence agencies. There are no "back doors" in this system, unlike certain other encryption techniques. This makes it much more secure than cyphers conforming to the so-called DES standard promulgated by the Bureau of Standards. I ask a very modest $3.00 contribution to register this version 1.1 of *ONETIME*. Registration gets you the next update free as well as a reasonable amount of technical consultation, by mail, on encryption problems and techniques using this software. ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ DISCLAIMER I, the author, will not be responsible for any damages, actual or incidental caused by use of the *ONETIME* file security package. If you, as a registered user, are dissatisfied with any aspect of it, I will without question refund the full $3.00 registration fee, if desired. This is the full extent of my responsibility. Any unlawful or immoral use of the *ONETIME* file security package is strictly prohibited. This software is intended for use by honest, law abiding persons only for uses such as keeping business data files confidential, for keeping data files on networked computers secure from fellow users, etc. Of course, I the author, cannot be responsible for misuse of this software by irresponsible individuals, but I am confident that the vast majority of *ONETIME* users are persons governed by common sense and honesty.
