(MSI), developers of the WILDCAT! bulletin board system, joins with Technique Computer Systems, developers of the TOMCAT! mail door, SLMR mail reader and TNet Network message processor, in announcing the acquisition of Technique by MSI. "The purchase of TOMCAT!, TNet and SLMR allows us to move closer to our goal of becoming a single-source supplier for our customers" said Jim Harrer, Mustang's President and CEO. Based on an agreement this date, the principals of Technique will become a part of the MSI programming team effective January 6, 1992. Development, distribution and ownership of TOMCAT!, SLMR and TNet will be transferred to MSI on that date. Both Scott Brynen and Greg Hewgill will be joining the programming staff at MSI, an addition that is sure to result in even further enhancement of Mustang's position as a leader in communication and BBS software. "Besides purchasing the products, the addition of Scott Brynen and Greg Hewgill adds additional strength to our development team, allowing us to bring new and innovative products to market much quicker. We're very pleased they've agreed to come on board as we believe it gives us the most talented development team in the BBS community" Harrer said. In an effort to keep customers of both companies informed, the following specific product information is being released. It is designed to help users make informed decisions regarding future purchases, and to limit speculation and rumor about the future direction of the newly acquired products. 1. TOMCAT! - TOMCAT! is a mail door designed primarily for sysops operating a WILDCAT! BBS. It creates mail packets in the .QWK format for download by callers. This product has been available as a limited-function shareware program with a registration price of $50 through Technique. MSI intends to include it with the WILDCAT! BBS with the first minor update after January 6, 1992. In the interim, the current release of TOMCAT! for WILDCAT! Version 3 is being released as a FULLY FUNCTIONAL FREEWARE PROGRAM to allow all current or prospective WILDCAT! sysops to immediately take advantage of the changes scheduled for 1992. The freeware version of TOMCAT! will be available for download on 10/14/91 from the Mustang HQ BBS, and will be updated on the BBS as needed between now and its initial WILDCAT! release in 1992. Orders for TOMCAT! will no longer be accepted by Technique Computer Systems, however support will continue to be handled by them until it is assumed by MSI on January 6, 1992. Users who purchased TOMCAT! from Technique after 9/1/91 will receive a free subscription to the MSI Auto-update Plan ($50) to become effective on January 6, 1991. the Auto-Update Plan covers all minor updates to WILDCAT! and the PRO! Series released during the subscription period. Major updates are not included. 2. SLMR (Silly Little Mail Reader) - SLMR is a .QWK compatible message reader and reply program. It allows use of any ASCII editor to read and reply to messages downloaded by a user from any type BBS, including the TOMCAT! mail door. SLMR continues to be produced and marketed by Technique until January 6, 1992, at which time it will be taken over and re-released by MSI. Support for SLMR will continue to rest with Technique until it is assumed MSI on January 6, 1992. 3. TNet - TNet is an add-on to the TOMCAT! mail door that allows it to process .QWK packets for echoing WILDCAT! conferences on multiple BBS systems. TNet continues to be produced and marketed by Technique until January 6, 1992, at which time it will be taken over and re-released by MSI. Support for TNet will continue to rest with Technique until it is assumed by MSI on January 6, 1992. MSI is very excited about the addition of the new products and staff. These changes are the first in a series of enhancements slated for the five year old company. Harrer went on to say "Over the next few weeks we will be unveiling and implementing additional plans to allow us to offer even more alternatives and value to our customers".
