ONE BIG FDN?? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A goal many are working toward is having all File Distribution Networks carried by a few systems in one 'file-backbone'. Some systems carry SDN, some carry SDS, some carry PDN/SDN/SDS, some PDN/WIN/CLN etc.. a few carry just about all of the FDN's.. but where is a sysop to link in for what? As it stands now.. links into various distribution networks are somewhat - where you find them. Many distribution networks periodically publish a node participation listing that is more or less accurate but finding that listing is another problem. A goal to be reached is 'one stop shopping' for all your file-echo needs at some regionally recognized FDN hub. The problems in creating an overall FDN are many. It is one of the most complex hobby issues I have worked on. Presently there seems to be two movements toward the FDN goal. One movement seems to be concentrating on an overall long distance 'filebone' of systems which would carry all file distribution services. The filebone would have it's own internal operations policy but basically just lend itself to the use of participating distribution services as the top tier of linkage for existing distribution sites. In this way individual services would just make use of this conduit and connections to it would be up to each services head. The other movement seems to be concentrating on the technical aspects of how existing distribution services might fit into an overall schema, how individual policies of existing services might melt into an overall policy and how file areas of existing services might be sectioned into the overall FDN service. For the most part, these two movements seem to agree that the existing distribution networks would become more generic in policy. The 'filebone' movement suggests individual services can have individual policies as long as it does not go against overall FDN site policy. The other movement suggest an overall FDN policy as a base with 'moderator' differences allowed. Present individual services would become 'sections' in the overall FDN plan with existing top management of each service becoming moderators of their respective sections. This moderation is a good idea. Each existing service has grown a bit of it's own way in response to the type of software and users it brings together. MIDI music files are timeless and versions numbers are meaningless in comparison to Shareware's version and revision number. With source code as distributed via PDN security compression is not needed while shareware authors greatly desire the protection and verification. In SDS (directed for sysop use) files that come down the pike are scrutinized by most sysops for possible use to make their BBS run better.. grips and grumbles against some software package in SDS are more common.. while shareware and source code users would rather download new stuff than absorb online time writing a message that they were displeased with any particular package. All distribution services have their needs and best operating schema. To the outsider it would seem easy to merge services into one big service. Once the complexities of each service are seen and the 'whys' of doing strange things are known.. it just doesn't make sense to quickly squash all services together without making sure the present life and flavor of each service is preserved. What may seem like ego and useless policy to another service is mostly an ignorance of what has made that 'other' service successful, popular and workable. If all service are quickly merged into one with no thought given to the present life of each existing service that will be merged.. then most of the services will quickly run into hard times with less files to distribute, breakdown of ways to gather reliable files to distribute, a breakdown of input security and a basic free-for-all in hatching god-knows-what files into worldwide distribution. If the new overall FDN is not subdivided into moderation by existing distribution services.. then the very thing that a new FDN would be made up of (the individual services) might start running into obstacles and forms of operation that may not be perpetuating to each service and therefore the whole 'FDN'. Both movements seem to also agree that rather than a hardnosed policy for FDN operations.. what is desirable is 'guidelines' of voluntary cooperation. If you are a major file hub for FidoNet and are interested in helping to for a 'filebone', Erik VanRiper would like to hear from you at 1:107/230 SDS and SDN, perhaps the largest distribution services in fido have agreed to merge. Presently discussions are taking place on how the merge is to be accomplished, a distribution plan and figuring all the consequences the merge would generate. The recent holidays have slowed progress on the merger but fido sysops should expect to see it in the coming months. All in all.. I expect to see a worldwide form of overall FDN that includes most existing services by the end of summer '92 (god where is that big hard drive!?) Exactly what form FDN will take.. is not yet clear. Interesting to note that PC Sources magazine had an item on SDN on page 250 of the January 1992 issue. They almost got it right. They did seem to put a user-help spin on things that has caused a mess of mail from people who want me to send them a catalog(!) Somewhere out there I know there exists a Mac Shareware Distribution Network (MSDN) and I have heard of a GeoWorks Distribution Network. I would like to hear from these. The Christian Distribution Network (CDN) sm is a computer-based system for distributing computer software and text files to computer users who wish to use their computers for some phase of Christian endeavors. With approximately 100 computer Bulletin Board Systems (BBS) connected via their dial-up telephone modems, this organization is now international and offers its services on several continents. A common question is "How do you make '1-2-3' to be 'Christian?'" Actually, some very innovative software has been developed as a result of the CDN. Not only does the Project distribute Bible concordance software, Church/Parish member tracking and business software, etc but it even carries a graphics- oriented aid to evangelism and a Christian-based BBS software package. They have available a database program for organizing the published music pieces and the Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) files to play hundreds for contemporary and standard Christian music. The CDN Project continues in the same "hobby spirit" as the SDNet/Works! (sm) Project (Meriden, CT) from which it germinated. CDN uses the filename extensions ".SDN" and ".SDA" and "Security Envelope" (supplied by NoGate Consulting) through a license from the SDN Project. The .SDN extension refers to an archived package that is electronically "shrink wrapped" with a special seal that, once opened, cannot be replaced -- thus assuring that the package is original and has not been tampered with (the major method computer viruses are injected in computer software). The "security envelope" can be tested by the end user to assure its authenticity. Although most of CDN's programs are shared via a user calling a local computer BBS using his or her modem, some users prefer to exchange floppy disks. For this reason, the CDN has set up specific nodes that offer such a service. For example, recently the OnLine Bible program (14 360K diskettes) was made available to those interested through postal distribution. Some of the overseas systems also require floppy transfers of the larger files. There are several types of CDN members, based on the requirements for each level. Full members fly the CDN user flag in the nodelist for whatever network they are a participant. Full members must carry all program file areas, maintain files for a specified length of time, and not change the compression type or remove the Security Envelope during the specified minimum time. Limited members do not fly the CDN flag. They are not required to carry all program file areas, and may make any legal changes in the compression technique, remove the security envelope or delete the files after a specified limited time on their systems. Finally, a recipient is considered a "user" and has no restrictions placed on them. CDN operates in at least four different hobby computer networks: Family Net International (FNI) AgapeLink Christian Network (ACN) FidoNet(tm) International New Parents Network (NPN) In FNI and ACN, CDN is Region 200. In FidoNet and NPN, CDN systems operate as individual nodes within the nodelists. All four networks allow the User flag "CDN" on the system's nodelist entry. The CDN is Region 200 in both the FamilyNet (zone 8) and AgapeNet (zone 70). As a "Special Interest" group, the CDN automatically issues node numbers in both of these networks upon acceptance of a BBS into the organization. This allows the new BBS access to approximately 100 family-oriented (and often Christian-based) message conferences (message bases that are "echoed" among many modem-linked BBSs) during the same call for picking up the CDN files. Most of these popular utilities are hatched within 2 days of their release. To prevent duplication, all submissions should be sent to 260/222. Robert K. If anything that comes in that is also labeled to work on Wildcat v2.x we will process it under the WDNET2 area. I'd like to keep most any program that has a v3 label of some sort in the WDNET3 area. I am a member of the Wildcat ALPHA team who has become a familiar name in the Wildcat echo. I try my best to offer an objective opinion of the Wildcat program and all the utilities associated with it. My system has become the "semi-official" file request site for all the Wildcat files available on the Mustang HQ-BBS and I felt it only natural to start a file distribution network for this purpose. We maintain most ALL of the files available and continue to collect more each day. With the help of the Authors we will have an even better system to offer to the other Wildcat sysops out there. Mustang and Jim Harrer have already given me their support on this and they too will be getting involved in the Net! I enjoy helping the other fellow Wildcat sysops in the echo, as we all at one time or another have needed advice from a knowledgable source or two. I also run an ALL WILDCAT private message Network known as PROWL which stands for the Professional Wildcat Lynx and offer a friendly atmoshpere for all the users from one system to another. This day and age when the Fido conferences have gotten so structured and moderated, they really do not offer the users a means of simply conversing with one another.
